VOLS cancelling basketball series with Memphis after next season according to Rick Barnes

After next month's game in Knoxville and next December's game at Bridgestone in Nashville, VOLS will no longer face Memphis.
Last year VOLS and Memphis got in to a little skirmish late in Memphis as VOLS were up double digits and Penny said VOLS had "their fists balled". Barnes then made fun of him by asking VOLS radio PBP guy if he had his fists balled ready to fight the Memphis PBP guy. Then Penny said "Rick Barnes get the frick out of here". A lot of jabs on social back and forth between players since then. Should be an entertaining last two games of the series.

"I don't anticipate that will be continued. We have a series with Wisconsin, a series with Cincinnati, some opportunities to do some home and homes out on the west coast with some programs I respect that have had a lot of success. You know we've played Gonzaga several times since I've been here, Kansas now a couple times. We have neutral site game against North Carolina, who we just finished a home with and then Villanova, Purdue lined up. We will do what we've always done which is challenge ourselves with great home and homes for our fans and continue to play against the best teams in the country at neutral sites. We have six non league games this year against teams that won at least one game in the NCAA Tournament last year, which is the most in the country. Our schedule is going to get us prepared like it always has.

I wonder if Mempiss will even make it to next year without the NCAA shutting them down.

It's not surprising. Memphis always turns out to be more trouble than they're worth. I wish that wasn't the case because I do like watching the teams play but it is.

Looks as though Memphis needs this series a lot more than VOLS. While VOLS have games against Washington, Florida State, Purdue/VCU, Cincinnati, Wisconsin, Kansas and the entire SEC slate, Memphis has two KenPom top 25 teams on the entire schedule outside of VOLS, and they already lost to one of them.

We've never needed the series in either football or basketball but they act like it's somehow a gift from them to us to play them. I know it has a metric ton more to do with politics than sports but I've never understood why Memphis acts the way they do toward UT. You'd think putting UT medical school there despite making it a PITA for everyone else would've satisfied them (that's what all the pols wanted) but I think it just pissed them off more.

You’d think Tennessee would want to continue to play Memphis.
The Tigers have a much more historically significant basketball program, and as of late, the best football program in the state.
The Vols are losing a huge opportunity to show that they can play on the same stage as the big boys by cancelling this series. Reminds me of UCF backing down from UF’s 2 for 1 offer in football.

Yeah looks like Rick is really having trouble replacing that marquee Memphis series.
You think cancelling a series in which we hold the series lead in order to play UNC, Villanova, Wisconsin, etc. is backing down?

No and no. Every bit of bball success they have had has been vacated and we would kick their arse in football.
