Vol fans: What happened with Cuonzo Martin?

He improved the Vols every year and made the sweet 16 in his final year. Why did he leave?
Interested in some background as he's emerging as a serious candidate for us.

He has Cal playing pretty good. They had Oregon on the ropes last night and lost on a buzzer beater.

He's improved every spot he's been, and he should be able to recruit STL like a monster if he was at Mizzou.
I'm warming up to the idea

I know man...I'm still leery.

Cuonzo Martin and Frank Martin are 1a and 1b on my wishlist of coaches

You know I respect you but that scares me a little.

But both are at better programs.

Trying to keep it realistic, plus....we can't go down from where we're at

Ok. Ole Miss is a better football program than Alabama.

His teams always underachieved. Many hailed the Sweet 16 team as some sort of coaching success, but that team had no business being on the bubble.
He is the type of coach that teaches "toughness and defense", the type of shite that takes no coaching acumen. I would not want him to coach my team and would much rather have Barnes who doesn't leave campus to recruit.
ESPN said he left because VOLS supporters are racist and he feared for his life while in Knoxville.

Settling for Frank Martin? I like him as a coach but he should be down the list IMO. We should do better.

Us white Tennesseans were so racist for criticizing poor Cuonzo. It's not like he had roster with 3 NBA guys and played in arguably the worst power 5 basketball conference that year. Totally intolerant of us to be upset at him in year 3 for being on or outside the bubble the entire season with a roster full of NBA talent.
Not to mention the fact that his brand of basketball is boring and never flows in the half court. Plus he has zero personality as a figure head.

They ran him out of town because they wanted to rehire Bruce Pearl, even had a petition with 40K sigs and bought an ad in the paper.
I think he ends up at Illinois though.

That's my bet as well.

Very, very average basketball coach. Can't speak for other Tennessee fans but I was very pleased when he left Tennessee.
He will have you ok-solid every year but he will need to overwhelm teams with talent or get a very, very good draw (like what he had at Tennessee in his Sweet 16 year) to ever accomplish anything at all in March.
Very, very suspect offensive acumen imo.
As another poster said he had Jordan McRae, Jarnell Stokes, Jeronne Maymon, Josh Richardson, Armani Moore, Robert Hubbs and Darius Thompson and was in the First 4 in 2014.
His kids are going to buy in and play good defense but the next time he makes an in game adjustment to help his team win a game will be the first.
His teams seem to play to the level of competition almost every night.

I will say on the positive side of things that his teams seem to get better as the season goes on. Every year he was at Tennessee (and just about every year he's been a head coach) his teams are playing much better by the end of February than they were in December.
As long as you are solid talent wise you will have a shot just about every time out by the end of the year, but you could also lose to SEMO on a cold December night in Como and it wouldn't shock me at all.

His offense is borderline unwatchable. He plays a grind it down style that is not exciting. I have season tickets and I was just sick of it by the time he left. I was glad when he did.
We were all racist though for saying ANYTHING about him. So have fun with that.

Cuonzo and Grant were very similar. We played some unwatchable basketball games against each other.
The 2014 team had Josh Richardson, Jordan McRae and Jarnell Stokes. The fact that they barely slipped into the tournament was semi embarrassing.
To be fair to Cuonzo, though, he found Richardson and helped him improve year over year.
He'd clearly be an improvement over what's there now, but he has a 7-8 seed type progeam ceiling.
