The B1G network is part of most sports packages already in the DC area

It's a part of my UVerse package in Ms as well. Point is... it costs television subscribers less than $0.10/subscription outside of the B1G markets. It costs $0.90/subscription inside the B1G markets(where it is in high demand). An SEC network will be worth much more than this inside the SEC market, because we care so much more.

Excellent reading on the topic here: LINK

Twice as many people live in the Delaware Valley (metro Philly) than the entire state of Mississippi. Caring must get bonus points

Is the combined size of the Ole Miss & State staduims equal to 105 k ?

To both KillianRussell and StraightCashHomey21--There's no doubt there are loyal fans in the DC area of many schools, B1G, SEC, ACC, whatever conference. Being the nation's capital this is to be expected.

The question is, are there enough of them to command a larger fee per subscriber?

One rough measure to use is the number of alumni chapters in an area. Florida, for example, has four such chapters (Gator Clubs) in the South Florida area alone (six if you count the Florida Keys). Penn State only has three and none in the Keys.

How about friggin CLEMSON. Thats as close to an SEC team as you are going to get out of the ACC.

This bastardized conference business sucks. I am still pissed that Arkansas and South Carolina got let in.

I am not a Conf. homer I have no idea how the others factor in but yes Penn State with the nations largest alumni assoc.(closer to Happy Valley than Philly) has a huge DC presence.

ETA Do you know how big Penn State is in terms of enrollment ?
In addition to the 44 k in central pa there are an equal number of students state wide doing year one and two at 13 satelitte campus

I would guess PSU has 88k students enrolled at this time

adding VT wouldn't change that i remember the VT@Maryland game not on TV in dc it was on espn3 and not even on a local affiliate

Population does not equal viewers. 85% of 1 million is greater than 5% of 15 million. This has been shown to you in EXCRUCIATING DETAIL on here, repeatedly, yet you keep returning to the same song and dance.

I'm still awaiting your explanation of why more people in Birmingham watched the 4 non-championship BCS games last year that SEC teams did not partake in, than people in Chicago with 2 B1G teams playing?? If that doesn't tell the story in a way that you can understand, nothing can.

Stadium smack as well? State and OM combined currently put 120,000(before both of our current expansions) in the stands every weekend + 36,000 at Southern Miss.

150,000 in a state of 3 million people = 5% of entire population.

175,000(Penn St, Pitt, and Penn) in a state of 13 million people = 1.35% of total population. But yeah, you care just as much**

South Florida area (Miami/Fort Lauderdale/Palm Beach plus the Keys). I thought the comparison was more clear but I apologize for not making it so.

Thanks Engie! Excellent article, and given that the SEC Network will have better content (since SEC baseball is second-to-none while the B1G can't find the baseball in all the snow), the $$$ will definitely mean MEGAPROFIT for the schools (maybe we're at GIGAPROFIT levels?)

FWIW, I'm very interested in what the new SEC TV deals will come to. My guess:

-$25-$30mil per team for the renegotiated CBS/ESPN deals
-$5mil+ for the SEC network, with potential to grow to over $10mil

...Conservatively putting every SEC team over $30mil per year in TV revenue and potentially over $40mil per year in TV revenue

Which will basically be the death-blow to ACC football schools that are in "competition" with SEC schools....basically forcing FSU and Clemson and VaTech's hands into moving to the Big12/SEC
