Value of a head coach

I think there are 3 types:
1)the great offensive or defensive coordinator that is made a head coach. They are so good at running one side of the ball that it can lead to success. An example of this would be Lincoln Riley.
2)the program manager. They really couldn’t call an offense or defense, but they know how to hire good coordinators. An example would be Danos Swinney.
3)the combination of 1 &2. In my mind, these are best. This is Nick Saban or Urban Meyer. They excel at running a program, but could totally run the offense or defense if needed.
I think #3 is the ideal, but will take 2 over 1.

This one reason I like Pruitt as a coach and his development. He is a proven commodity as a defensive coach but meshes well with Fulmer as his AD. His ego isn’t so big as to not be able to adapt. He has Chaney and Chip Long running the O and a solid staff of recruiting and coaching guys. And he has rotated staff in and around to constantly improve. It’s like everything they do staff wise is done on purpose.
You can’t overstate a great AD/HC relationship.

It’s also why I like the Pittman hire. Seems like a great guy, old school fundamentals yet a players coach, loves the school and hired great coordinators.

Ironically, Urban Meyer has never been a coordinator and his teams have experienced major dips in form without an elite offensive coordinator (Mullen, Herman, Day) at the helm. I actually think he qualifies as more of a #2 (elite program manager) than #3 (elite program manager and offensive mind).

#1- Riley has never had a very competent defense but what is even worse he doesn't seem to kow how to evaluate defensive coordinators. You win natties from strength along both lines. Mike Stoops was bad, Alex Grinch is just as bad.
#2- Bingo, that's the key, and Dabo does that very well...among the top 3 in the college game.
#3- I don't think Meyer could totally run a defense. One of his main weaknesses was he hired close friends who were/are questionable hires that cost them playoff games in 2017 and 2018 with horrendous losses to Iowa and purdue in respective years. I am talking about Greg Schiano and Alex Grinch (now at Oklahoma), plus the Linebacker coach. Their defense was bad, I mean horrible under that threesome, not because of the players (had same players last year and were in the top 5 in the country) but the coaching.... It's still early but I think Ryan Day will be better than Urban because he checks every box as far as recruitment, player development, staff assembly and in game adjustments go...
I think Saban could lead an offense even though he is a defensive guy (notably DB/s)...

I hate him so much.
I actually thought he would work out until the last couple of years. He got off to a good start, then seemed to completely lose it.

Good recruiter.... His problem was he could not develop his talent and just as bad was his team of coaches.

It was over when he couldn’t win with the legacy rich team in 2016.
His blatant disregard for recruiting offensive linemen was damning as well.
Then when called on it, he went to their recruiting cycle being off and needed at least 3 years to correct it.
The arse was in his 4th year.
