1983 Auburn played the toughest schedule in the country. Just incredible, wins over #3 UGA, #6 Florida (who whupped Miami as mentioned), #15 Bama and #8 Michigan

And #7 Maryland with Boomer Esiason. That was our last five games.

the only debate was by west coast/east coast media. LSU has the trophy from that year. end of debate.

We all know LSU got lucky in 2003 to have a title shot.

I just remember all the UGA fans talking about how they should have won the first game if not for all the missed FGs and how they were going to kick LSU's arse the 2nd time in the Georgia Dome for the SEC Championship before LSU destroyed them.

Damn shame we let LSU steal that first game because we would have played ole miss in the dome otherwise

LSU won the National Championship in 2003 and that is all that matters.

It was perception that seeded some doubt AT THE TIME in the mind of some. Since then Saban has proved to be a winner; so has LSU. Both separately. Both decidedly. Any doubt that existed at time has been debunked. Any argument against it is trolling or envy.

Oklahoma was #3 in both polls but #1 in the computers.

The AP left the BCS after that season.

And also, I don't recall USC turning down the 2004 BCS Championship - the same one they claimed was magically not the official national championship in 2003. ??

They have the Coaches Trophy. USC has the AP National Championship Trophy. They also have the Grantland Rice Trophy from the FWAA.

Most of USC's "talent" was at the skilled positions, and most of those guys were pretty overrated and flopped in the NFL. Without even considering Reggie Bush, who was a great college player and a decent pro, examples include LenDale White, "Big Mike" Williams, Keary Colbert, and Matt Leinart. Their best player was actually OL Ryan Kalil, who went on to be a 5x Pro Bowler.

LSU, meanwhile, was very very good on both lines, including guys like 4x Pro Bowler Andrew Whitworth and 6x Pro Bowler Kyle Williams, who wasn't even LSU's best dlineman in college (I would actually rank him 4th behind Spears, Hill, and Lavalais). Then of course you got guys like Laron Landry, Corey Webster, Michael Clayton, and Devery Henderson. That team was loaded but played a conservative style that garnered little attention.

No question LSU would have done to USC what they did to just about everyone else that season.

Did they really steal the first game if In the second game in your home state they won by 3 touchdowns? I don’t think Bama stole the 2011 Championship, I think they were just better.

I agree. If you think there’s media bias today for the SEC then you don’t remember what it was like in 2003. ESPN was basically a huge advert for the likes of usc, Notre Dame and Michigan. They also had made up their mind to give usc a share after the Michigan bowl game not even waiting for the actual national title. USC’s claim on that title is about as good as Auburn’s the following year. Neither played in the title game that was the flawed but agreed upon system at the time.

Yes. LSU was much improved in December.
