SEC, ESPN strike 10-year deal for college football, basketball starting in 2024

quote:

ESPN+ will have the right to stream one nonconference football game and two nonconference men's basketball games per SEC school each season. All told, ESPN+ will carry up to 14 nonconference football games and up to 20 nonconference men's basketball games annually.

So, to make sure you are able to see all your team's games, you will now need subscriptions to ESPN, SECN, and ESPN+.

Basically, to have the same scope, we traded CBS (free) for ESPN+ (yet another subscription).

Do you not have access to ESPN+ if you already have access to ESPN through a cable provider?

Nope. Needs another subscription.

Faulty logic.

The SEC game of the week on CBS was the highest profile match up between 2 SEC schools. The ESPN+ clause you mention is a NON-conference game. It will be the worst game of the year for each of the teams.

Furthermore, you think that they're putting ANY Bama games on Espn+

ESPN+ is a standalone streaming service. It's possible that through some sort of bundle with your cable company you have access to it but for the most part you'll have to subscribe separately. $10/mo

ESPN+ is a steaming pile of shite that is bad enough when it's only supporting the dozens of people watching an early non-conference basketball game against directional tech U.

You got to have the ESPN app on the TV and it costs like 6 bucks a month

I think that's for ESPN 3. U have to pay extra for ESPN+... I think we get it with Disney+.

Knew that when I posted it, but it seemed verbose (already a weakness for me) to fully explain the difference. Still adds up to needing to buy another service to have the same access we had before without it.

Reminds me of when you had to do PPV for some games.

Just not a fan of ESPN's app and ESPN+. I've had tech issues with Disney+ as well on multiple platforms.

Hopefully they get it all unfricked before I have to watch UGA play Tennessee Tech or UMASS.

Why would Disney voluntarily give up subscription fees from Alabama fans by not forcing us to pay for ESPN+ to watch a game against UT-Chattanooga or Western Carolina that no one besides Alabama fans will watch? They're going to exercise this right with every team unless someone schedules a beast of an OOC slate.

You'll only need to buy it if you want to watch your team beat up on Texas Southern. I have no interest in the Alabama-Chattanooga game anyway, so ESPN+ can stick it.

And until 2023 that "worst game of the year" for Alabama will be available at no additional charge on the SEC Network or SEC Network alternate channel per my cable package. I'll now have to pay for an ESPN+ subscription just to watch ONE game every season.

I was wrong. It will be non-conference games. But we almost all play big OOC games every year, like A&M-Clemson, LSU-Texas, Florida-Wisconsin, etc.

You don't think they are going to make decisions on the games that will compel you to add the service? My guess is they will put the marquee game on primetime, and one of the next couple of "best" games on the Plus.

It won't be all garbage games, I would bet.

Basic marketing to maximize revenue, and Birmingham just gave them the keys to do it.

No. That is not interesting to advertisers, which ultimately is responsible for way more of ESPN's revenue than these subscriptions.

Also, the article, which you quoted, says:
quote:

ESPN+ will have the right to stream one nonconference football game and two nonconference men's basketball games per SEC school each season. All told, ESPN+ will carry up to 14 nonconference football games and up to 20 nonconference men's basketball games annually.

It says nothing about conference games. In fact, it says the opposite.

Already fixed that in the post above.
