Patrick Murphy accepts the LSU softball job days after the WCWS with Alabama, and then two days later, after an introductory press conference at LSU, backs out and comes back to Alabama. I can’t even imagine the shite storm if a football coach pulled this in this conference

Yeah I vaguely remember thinking wtf at the time. What’s the backstory on that? Is he from Louisiana?

A boatload of money and a sinus infection.

It was a rotten day. We'd just come back from the World Series, two bad losses, and I was hit with an incredible offer. I've been dealing with sinus issues and I didn't feel good. I was upset about the way it ended. And then they threw everything at me, and it was quick. I got overwhelmed, and that's about it

His mentor was former LSU head coach Yvette Girouard. He got his start in coaching under her at Lafayette.

I know it wasn’t in the past decade, but Didn’t Bobby Cremins do the same thing to South Carolina at one point?

Not in the last 10 years but a somewhat similar situation between LSU and Alabama actually did happen in football. Huey Long was a huge LSU fan and when he was Senator (he was still de facto governor) decided he wanted Frank Thomas to be the new coach.

He had everything worked out and Thomas asked to hold the announcement until he and his team made the train ride back to Tuscaloosa from the Rose Bowl. In the meantime people got in Huey’s ear to instead hire Bernie Moore, who was an assistant on LSU’s staff at the time. He relented and had to pull the offer to Thomas, which was somewhat scandalous at the time as handshake agreements were still held in high esteem.

Bernie Moore ended up having a Hall of Fame career at LSU and eventually became the SEC’s first commissioner.

This story was detailed in The Fighting Tigers by Peter Finney, who was a sports writer in Louisiana for 70 years and was considered The Godfather of LSU historians. Both the original Fighting Tigers and its sequels are excellent reads for those interested in college football history.

Thanks for sharing. Didn’t know that. Frank’s record at Bama isn’t too far off from what Saban's is now. Sounds like it worked out well for both parties

Yeah I wouldn’t trade Bernie as he got Y.A. Tittle to LSU and had some great teams, but in retrospect it would have been nice to have stolen bama’s coach

A picture LSU photoshopped.

I've met Alyson. Very nice lady. Genuinely loves Alabama and can see why she's such a great recruiter and coach.

LSU threw a lot of money at them and they did what most people would do, but found it hard when they actually had to say goodbye. Respect to them for that.

Not on the same level but this happened at LSU. John Thompson accepted a DC position with Saban in 2000 and left after a couple weeks to go to Arkansas. Thompson would go in to be quite the journeyman. Believe he was a DC for like 5 different SEC schools, never for more than 2 years

He was on radio in Baton Rouge within the last few years and they asked him about this. He basically in a nice way told a story about recruiting with Nick just the two of them in North Louisiana and decided to bail when he discovered what a raging a-hole Saban was

Maybe, but in hindsight it may not have been the best career move for him

He went to Arky IIRC so was a perfect moment to jump ship for him

In January 2000 he was still just Nick Saban. By the time he left LSU he was NICK SABAN

Yep. When she asked him to replace her he said he felt like he had to say yes.

If I remember correctly the that last morning Alyson came to Murph and said something like "This just feels wrong doesn't it?" and he agreed and that when he called Mal and told him he felt like he made a mistake. I remember telling a friend "He better win the title next year after all of this" and he did
