I think I have a serious concern about NCAA baseball umpires.

There has been a trend in the past several years to fill the college baseball umpire ranks with former minor league umpires that have gotten fired.

That has not been the case in the past. College umpires came up through the ranks starting in Little League, High School, Junior College and finally College.

Occasionally a former pro umpire would move to college.

Professional umpires are trained differently. They pay to attend one of the umpire schools in either Florida or Arizona. They are taught to be confrontational and those who could not succeed were fired and became UPS delivery people.

The umpires who survived youth baseball, high school, etc learned how to be more diplomatic or they moved up in those positions if they had the ability.

SEC and other major conferences would do well by going back to the basics.

Football continues to do it the old way. The better officials rise and those not so good remained at their level.

In football you get the occasional Percy Penn or Randy Chrystal but by and large you get better officiating in football and basketball.
