Nik Scalzo suffers injury in practice

quote:

Following a team scrimmage on Saturday, head coach Mark Stoops announced that Nik Scalzosuffered a knee injury. Scalzo is now undergoing tests, so it’s still unclear how severe it could be.

A true freshman out of Cardinal Gibbons High School in Florida, Scalzo was a 3-star recruit in the Class of 2019. The 28th-ranked dual-threat quarterback via 247 Sports composite also held offers from Tulane, Illinois, Harvard, Buffalo and Akron among others.

Scalzo tore his ACL in the state playoffs this past season, but he’s made a full recovery and has been a full participant in UK training camp. His latest injury is in the same knee.

It was already highly likely that Scalzo would be redshirting this season as Terry Wilson and Sawyer Smith are taking the top two quarterback spots. That left Scalzo to compete with Amani GIlmore and Walker Wood for the third-string duties.

Scalzo is one of three quarterbacks featured in season three of the Netflix documentary series QB1: Beyond the Lights. The latest season released on Friday. You can go here to start watching the first episode right now.

I had my doubts that he would ever play anyway. Sucks for the kid but with multiple leg injures, I wouldnt be surprised if he gives up football.

Sorry to hear that. The offers he got from the other schools tells me he is a good student and will probably do well in life if indeed his football career is now over.

He should've gone to Harvard.

Well Terry's our starter, and Sawyer Smith from Troy has transfered in as QB2. At this point Nick needs to absolutely redshirt.

Considering Amani Gilmore on the roster, and a few other guys we're recruiting for 2020, yeah, this is extremely unfortunate but Nic probably has some decisions to make at this point.

Why would he give up football? ACL recoveries are textbook these days, even with multiple ACL tears to the same knee.

I tore my ACL on the same knee twice within a year... it didn't stop me from making a full recovery... and I didn't have nearly the time to train and recover like a college athlete would.

He actually talked about his Ivy offers in the QB1 show. He said he was very interested, but with no athletic scholarships in the Ivy league and with his family being above the income line for free school, he couldnt afford paying 70k a year to go to Harvard or Yale.

It would've been worth it. They still reduce tuition at Harvard for those whose incomes are above the free limit. You can make between 65k to 150k and Harvard still only charges you 10 percent of your income for tuition. Less than that and it's free.

His parents must be loaded if they don't get any of that and in that case they can afford it. Yale may be different but as far as Harvard goes he's probably just wrong/confused about the cost he'd pay.

I hear from several people in Louisiana that Gilmore is the real deal and will be a stud for y'all when he gets his chance.

So it's the same knee he's had the ACL injury, but no word on if the new injury involves that ACL? Hopefully not. He needs to red-shirt this year and heal up and get ready for 2020. It's not like UK will be doing anything this year anyways.....

I need some evidence for me to believe it since my experience with similar schools is much different.

I hate it when anyone gets hurt regardless of team because these guys are no different than the rest of us who played ball and just want to compete. Hopefully it turns out to be not so bad. Stuff like this breaks a kids heart.

I hope Gilmore turns out to be good. I can see him getting home sick and entering the portal if he doesnt start in 2 years.
