Rick Pitino was one of my favorite college bball coaches, I'm kind of disappointed that he apparently wants this current season cancelled now, but still on the college Mt. Rushmore imo. He brought UK back from sanctions and won the 1996 title and pretty much left Tubby the keys to a Ferrari.
Calipari inherited a program at a historical low (though not from sanctions), quickly won an NC but has massively underachieved since then. Obviously you can't fire him bc he routinely brings in the best talent. So it seems like he's Kirby Smart with a ring at this point.

I liked Pitino No one likes Cal. Even the greatest player of all time MJ didn't like Cal.

Pitino is Michael Corleone and Calipari is Sonny

I prefer Pitino to Cal, but Cal has done good
Also
Cal is a winner, Kirby is not.
When Kirby wins a title then maybe this comparison will be more apt

Based solely on their time at Kentucky, its Pitino by a country mile for me. The 1996 Kentucky Wildcats is our best team ever, and probably the best CBB team ever. Not even joking. The Pitino era was fun to watch. Blowing teams out by 20-30, as opposed to watching Cal pull the air out of the ball. If Cal would change his strategy he could be wildly successful here (compartively speaking.. .I realize he has done amazing here.) Cal is certainly more affable. But OAD blows and honestly our games are often hard to watch.

Pitino is a great X’s and O’s coach. Calipari is a recruiter

Two of the biggest cheaters in hoops history
Has any uk coach been clean since the 80s
Maybe tubby and he was run out of town

I'm one of those odd UK fans who still likes Pitino even though he went to UL. He didn't go directly to UL, so I don't see it as a betrayal.
The Pitino years were AMAZING. I worked at UK during this time, and got to spend a lot of time at Memorial Coliseum. He was most definitely a prick from a personality perspective (was in an elevator with him by ourselves, I spoke, he didn't), but his ability to turn a bunch of slow overweight UK players into a good team in 5 months was amazing to watch.
I got to see a bunch of practices, and they were INTENSE. He was laser focused on every aspect of what he was doing, and of course had Billy D, and Tubby alongside. It was pretty special.
Cal was a perfect fit for UK, should have been hired 2 years earlier. He's not a great X's and O's coach, as we have all seen, but tremendous recruiter. Yes, he should have like 5 national titles now, so massive underachieving given the talent.
Cal's personality is great, and he's such a good ambassador, but his "players first" speeches do grate on a fans nerves, as we care about their time at UK more than when they leave for the millions.

The 1995 SECT title game between Kentucky and Arkansas....still the best SEC basketball game Ive ever seen. And weve had some damn good ones since then.

Yeah was pretty sad. I don't think many ppl even care if Wade is guilty, just angry he was young and careless enough to get caught. Veteran coaches have layers of agents/bagmen between them

I’ve said for years if it wasn’t for Pitino, UK wouldn’t be where it is today. He saved my basketball team. I know he’s done a lot to tarnish his career, but I respect him. He won only one title at Kentucky, but it was the best team I ever saw play. I’d pick them over Cal’s 2012 title team and the 38-1 team any day.

Pitino would have won at least two more titles here. Zero doubt in my mind.
Cal could win another one if he'd ever change his approach.

Pitino's teams were more fun to watch but they were also more experienced. It takes time to teach the defenses he installed in the 90's and in today's era the kids just don't stay around. Cal has recruited guys projected to stay longer like Gilgeous-Alexander and Herro and they have blown up as frosh and poof they are gone.
I liked that Pitino put the foot to the throat and didn't let anyone back in the game. Cal gets a lead and milks it.
They are both arrogant, decisive, winners and have the ego to take on the Kentucky job. But Rick's character flaws are the big issue. I know people don't like Cal but he has done more teaching than Rick did. Teaching helping the unfortunate and being better people.
So Pitino's play style, Cal's personal life and teaching.

The 1996 team was the best I've ever seen too. Different era. Those guys wouldn't have played past their frosh year in today's environment.
