UGA fans: travel tips for Athens baseball trip

I'm heading to Athens for the baseball series this weekend, and am looking for some suggestions for places to eat (lunch, mostly, given starting times) and other things to do.

Get lunch at Cali N Titos. Best Cuban sandwich around and it's no more than 200 yards from the baseball stadium.

While I fully agree that the Cuban from Cali N Titos is the best sandwich in town, it is definitely not what I would consider a traditional cuban sandwich (hell, maybe it is traditional, but it is nothing like a Cuban you'd get anywhere else- no ham, no pickles, no mustard). Don't let that stop you though.

Foley is nowhere near downtown but you can make it a point with some planning to hang out DT before driving down to the stadium. Cali N Tito’s is a solid close option but it’s cash or check only so come prepared and they don’t serve alcohol (it’s BYOB). Grindhouse Burgers is a little further down the sidewalk and does booze and takes card if that’s be more your style.
Overall, tons of good shopping, restaurants, bars, and music venues downtown. If you’re a night owl you won’t have a problem finding stuff to do postgame. Also plenty of outdoors stuff to do assuming the weather warms up this week. If you need restaurant recommendations feel free to ask (everyone will send you to Last resort and Mamas Boy which are perfectly fine but more or less the designated out of towner eateries)

I've never understood the hype. After spending 15 years in Athens I've yet to have a single meal there that I would classify as any better than "that was OK, not bad" and for the price you can do so much better around town.
Mama's Boy- yea, I'm all in on that place.. but the wait can suck real bad.

Cali N Titos for every meal. If you're stupid and want to mix things up, then I'd go to Transmet for pizza, Weaver D's for excellent fried chicken and fixings, and Mama's Boy to grab some breakfast. If you're out late night and want some good drunk food, hit up The Grill. Creature Comforts is a cool brewery with a taproom downtown. If you're going with your wife then take her to the botanical gardens, they're great. Take a walk around north campus (the historic part of campus). There are some cool stores downtown like Wuxtry Records that you should pop into.

Thanks for the info. We're staying at the UGA hotel, but will have a rental car so we can go wherever. Games starting at 7 sort of rule out any big dinner plans, and we'll just have to see what the mood is post-game.

People have already mentioned the two best places to eat that are close to Foley (Cali & Titos and Grindhouse), so I'll give you some restaurant and other recommendations for downtown:
Nicer/Fancier options:
-Last Resort (most popular restaurant downtown, great food but long waits)
-Five Bar
-The National (my personal favorite restaurant downtown)
-Porterhouse (very reasonable lunch prices)
-South Kitchen & Bar (solid food but nothing special)
More relaxed:
-Trapeze/Highwire (good sandwiches/pub food and an extensive beer list)
-Ted's Most Best (good/creative pizza options)
-Transmetropolitan (also good pizza with other Italian options)
-Georgia Theatre Rooftop (cool views with solid burgers/snacks, but can get cramped)
-Pauley's (sandwich/crepe bar with extensive beer list and swarms of sorority girls)
-Clarke's Standard (solid bar food)
-Amici (see above, but with good wings)
-The Place (great southern food - good call by tylerdurden24 to remind me of this)
-Clocked (great burgers/horrible service)
-Iron Factory (korean bbq)
Hole in the wall/late night food:
-Little Italy (NY style pizza, might get yelled at by the staff but the slices are huge and it's fantastic drunk food)
-Pouch (different types of savory pies)
I'm sure there are some places I'm forgetting, but I tried to include a bunch of different options. Also highly recommend checking out Creature Comforts, a brewery located downtown, which is a really cool spot with some great beers (especially Tropicalia). Enjoy Athens!

The Place has the best Southern food in Athens and Amici has the best wings. Teds is my go to for pizza but I endorse Transmet as a good option as well

I'd recommend Herschel Walker's restsurant, get the Oh Herschel sandwhich and fried mac and cheese. It's a pant shitting good time

Weaver D's closes at 6, but is well worth the early dinner. Weaver will tell you what meat they have that day, and Miss Dorothy will tell you the available sides. Hot Chicken or pork chops are my go to, and don't skip the greens.

I might be in the minority, but if I'm going to Atlanta or Athens and need a quick cheap lunch, the Varsity is good.
