If conference champions get an auto bid, Washington is in. Otherwise UCF gets the 8 seed.

Considering this is for who would get to play Bama, I dont think it matters too much as either team likely loses horribly.

Which team is more deserving and why? Conference champion or top 8 team?

Washington

But I would put a caveat on 8 team playoff 5 power 5 auto bids you must be ranked at least in Top 12/15 or so to get the auto bid, otherwise it goes elsewhere. Washington is still in, but I think that's a valid concern to keep like a 9-4 conference champ out.

If it was an 8-team playoff though, it's feasible they rank the teams different in the end, ie UCF maybe even above Michigan?

In the end I dont feel bad for UCF being left out a 4 team or really even 8 team playoff. They played nobody OOC and the only team worth mentioning they played in conference was Cincinnati.

They'd be in a 16-team playoff for sure though.

See that's where I started. But the more I think about it the more I feel it should go to the top 8 teams. The committee exists to determine the best teams. Let the best teams play. Gotta go with UCF.

Do you think UCF would beat UW in a head to head matchup on a neutral field, where there was no question of either teams level of motivation?

The answer to that question answers the OP.

Put both teams in and leave out the team that got destroyed by Ohio State in the last game of the year.

Washington. They played a 100% better schedule.

No way a 2 loss Michigan should be left out when their only losses are to playoff teams so a 3 loss Washington who lost to Auburn gets a chance.

The first time Alabama is rematched with LSU in the quarters and then has another rematch with Georgia in the semis the whole purpose of an eight team playoff begins to look less than advertised.

I think if the CFP was 8 the committee would rank it different to get UCF in
They’d probably be above Michigan

Why do you think that? What value does UCF bring? If you let them in and the next year 3 group of 5 teams are undefeated who do you let in? If you let UCF in what would stop ND from watering down their schedule to guarantee they make the playoff ever year?
