I know we all have them... but there seems to be a prevailing theme here. Do they go to the games? Do they hang outside the stadium? Do they actually outnumber the alumni? How many on here went to bama? So many questions but I've always been curious.

I used to work with a guy who grew up in Arizona. Loudest, most obnoxious dumbass dude I may have ever met. Grew up a USC fan in the early 00's. You know, when they were awesome. Met a girl from Bama and moved back here after they married. He's now a huge Bama fan, and has every Wal-Mart t-shirt ever licensed by the university. Bitched about how he can't get Medicaid for his 8 yr old son who recently found out he is diabetic. But threw down $600 For tickets to the FSU game at the Benz last year.

He is the poster child of sidewalk Bama fans. The only time he has been to Tuscaloosa was driving through it. Goes and pays to meet players when they do signings at Wal-Mart or wherever after they leave the team. Ughhh. One of the more disgusting humans I've ever dealt with. He stalked the team hotel when he went to the FSU game and came back bragging about being barred from the premises lol. fricking moron.

I think they encompass all the above you questioned. I think a big problem is that they need to be the center of attention. Whether by continuing to win, or constantly being talked about. You see I bet they can't stand not being the focal point of everything. If it's not about them, then it's not irrelevant news and so it doesn't matter. It's them or nothing.

I'm kinda used to the UTexas fans when I was in Dallas... it was terrible. They'd show up at the State Fair eating a big turkey leg with the sidewalk shirt on. Loud, obnoxious and rather disgusting.

TAMU probably has more sidewalk fans than any other school in the country.

I assume by Bama Sidewalk fans you mean the loud, obnoxious, redneck types that everyone loves to talk about. If that is the case......

quote:

Do they go to the games?

95% only go to the "cheap" games (Western Carolina, Citadel, ULL, Arkansas State). There are some who have procured season tickets but most do not.

quote:

Do they hang outside the stadium?

I mean, yea, they are around. There are also tons of normal alums/non alum fans around who outnumber them 4 to 1. Almost anyone who comes to Tuscaloosa generally says it if a fun atmosphere and people are nice. Even rivals of ours.

Do they actually outnumber the alumni?

Non-alums or sidewalk fans we are discussing? If you are speaking of strictly non-alums, then yea definitely. If you are speaking of the loud, Got 12? tshirt wearing folks, no not even close. They are louder and more obnoxious, but they aren't close to the majority.

If you are strictly talking about going to a football game, Alabama does not have anymore obnoxious redneck people there than any other big state school would (Tennessee, LSU, Georgia, etc). The interaction with these people generally happens out and about across small towns in Alabama and the South, the beach, etc, not at football games.

I think this may be correct since over 50% of their alumni graduated 1997 to present. I have been to the stadium for a sold out games and seen many fans there older then that at games.

Wrong.. just look at the state of Texas and the amount of Power 5 football schools that exist.

Sure we have some sidewalk fans, especially since moving to the SEC but I imagine we're no where near the top end of the spectrum. Hell we don't even have the most sidewalk fans in our own state.

I have students all the time who wear bama gear to school, and they cant even tell me who the starting QB for bama is.

I tell them, that being born and raised in Louisiana and being a bama fan, is like being Born and raised in the USA and supporting ISIS. Shuts them up every time.

I don't know a single A&M sidewalk fan in South Texas. All A&M fans i know are graduates.

Texas t-shirt fans are all over the place.

I actually feel bad for the Bama fans pre-Saban because the bandwagon ruined the perception of an Alabama fan.

As for sidewalk fans, I don’t think they (sidewalk) are any less of a fan than alumni. I graduated from UGA but some of the biggest fans I know have never stepped foot in the MLC. A friend of mine at Terry College of Business was a huge GA Tech fan, so there’s that.

FTR, I realize this is a troll, but thought I’d contribute anyway.

This explains louisiana's education ranking.

It's also just kind of silly for anyone living in Alabama. I'd wager the large majority of the "bandwagon" fans are from outside the state.

People in the state are born with Alabama or Auburn, and losing is more likely to make you double down than switch sides. The vast majority of people in Alabama are rooting for Alabama or Auburn no matter what the hell happens on the football field. The result just effects how they talk shite or counter the shite talking to their family and friends for the rest of the year. It was that way in 1977, it was that way in 1998 and it is that way in 2018.

The only memory this jogs for me is the sidewalk flea market they run for a few blocks as you're walking to the stadium. It's not so bad. The worst thing I ever saw there was a black velvet painting called "Spirit in the Sky", which should have been titled "The Ascension of Bear Bryant". Extreme sacrilege.
