If college football does die it will likely be the combination of the two.

It’s the combo of the two that is lethal. Annual free agency with no salary cap or binding contracts.

No, the Portal won't kill college football
but it and its' partner NIL buying players with
a wild west scenario, is & will change
college football, in both obvious and multiple subtle
ways we can't yet see. Malo, malo.

Baseball did it the right way
I think the deadline to transfer was in July

Football needs same thing, set a deadline and not have it with players entering portal from Oct through the summer

It's going to be impossible for teams to manage rosters and everyone is gonna suffer for it

I don't think it will kill college football, but it is likely to give some kids a false sense of worth. For every Joe Burrow and Jameson Williams, there's a dozen Blake Barnetts.

We only really hear about the success stories, but when you think of the number of those vs the number of kids transferring, it gives a bit of perspective.

SEC set a 1 Feb deadline on intraconference transfers.

They can't affect those leaving the conference

That is sufficient as it allows needs to be identified before final signing day and spring camp

Bama has 5 good ones in the portal today. Grab one or two if you need them.

It's not one for one, as replacement scholarships can backfill empty spots. I'd like to see the # of kids who get left hanging for a D1 transfer and end up out of school or moving to a lower division

So it was fine for colleges to "manage their rosters" by tossing unproductive scholarship players from December to May to make room for next year's model, but NOW, you have a problem? The colleges/coaches of programs like Alabama (and the SEC in general) were so callous in their treatment of student athletes to get to the top of the mountain, it is amusing to watch them squirm a bit with the shift in balance of power. The NIL does hurt Bama because, no matter how rabid their upper echelon boosters are, there are plenty of other schools which have much larger pools of very wealthy boosters that might not have wanted to deal with the sordid stuff before the NIL made it all legit. Love these same guys now wish there was more loyalty.....

I'm interested in how this will all unfold. You can have a meh recruiting effort and shore up the team with experience through the portal. That's why recruiting prowess is nice but not the whole story now. Work the phones for those who are looking for a change of scenery.

College Football will be fine. Things are changing rapidly all at once, but everything will stabilize and balance out eventually.
