Used the final BCS standings for 2004-2013 and the final playoff standings for 2014-present. This is how many playoff appearances each team would have if there had been an eight team playoff with no auto bids for the past 15 seasons.
11 Appearances (73%): Ohio State (12 appearances, 80% without 2012 probation)
10 Appearances (67%): Alabama
8 Appearances (53%): Oklahoma
6 Appearances (40%): Georgia, Oregon, USC
5 Appearances (33%): Stanford
4 Appearances (27%): Auburn, Florida, LSU, Clemson, Notre Dame, Texas, Wisconsin
3 Appearances (20%): Boise State, Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State, TCU
2 Appearances (13%): Arkansas, Missouri, Baylor, Florida State, Kansas State, Utah, Virginia Tech
1 Appearance (7%): Miss State, Cal, Cincinnati, Iowa, Kansas, Louisville, Miami, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, Central Florida, Washington

So...kinda like it is now.

Yes a lot of familiar faces. The Ohio State number is scary to me. When you've got a program making it 80% of the time over 15 years, you're getting into college basketball territory.
Also, the BCS was much more kind to the non power conference teams than the playoff committee. I definitely don't think Boise would have 3 top 8 finishes with the committee ranking.

Here's what it'd look like with P5 auto bids, two at-large, and the highest ranked G5 team. Because 2004 was the first year for Miami and Virginia Tech in the ACC, I just went ahead and considered the Big East a non power conference even though it was an automatic BCS qualifier.
11 - Ohio State (still 12 without probation)
10 - Alabama
9 - Oklahoma
6 - USC
5 - Stanford, Clemson
4 - Florida, Georgia, Florida State, Oregon, Texas, Virginia Tech, Wisconsin
3 - Auburn, LSU, Penn State, TCU, Notre Dame, Central Florida
2 - Baylor, Boise State, Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Utah, Washington
1 - Miss State, Missouri, Cal, Cincinnati, Georgia Tech, Hawaii, Houston, Kansas State, Louisville, Northern Illinois, Oklahoma State, Wake Forest, West Virginia, Western Michigan

06 and 11? 2011 was a stacked season so probably not much different there, but I would have loved to see that McFadden squad in 06 in a playoff.

I actually like this format better I think. I'm fine with the four best teams, but once you get to eight, I'd rather see a mediocre conference champion like 2006 Wake get in there over a 3 loss team that's ranked 8th.
The G5 tie is 50-50 for me. When the team comes out of the American (formerly Big East) or the Mountain West, it fairs well in the postseason 9-1 in fact. Of course a lot of those teams are now in power five conferences.
Teams that came out of the MAC or WAC are 1-3 with the lone win coming in the Las Vegas bowl by Boise in 2011.

Gay. Do it after bowl games

Actually '10 and '11 is what I had for Arkansas.
In '10 as the eight seed, ya'll would've rematched Auburn.
In '11 as the six seed vs Oklahoma State

I'm a BCS fan myself.

2010 is little interesting. I think that team was better overall than the 2011 team. Played both Auburn and Bama close that year. Should have beaten Ohio State

We finished the regular season #8 in 2013

I think the AP had South Carolina eight, but the BCS had Mizzou eight.
It's possible I just messed it up though.

Why'd you only go back to 04 when the BCS started in 98?

Because it would put Alabama far behind Ohio state and Oklahoma.

That was Miami and Virginia Tech's first year in the ACC giving us 5 clearly superior conferences.
Pre '04 the Big East could be considered a power conference, so those years don't really translate to modern day.

98: Tennessee, Florida State, Kansas State, Ohio State
99: Florida State, Virginia Tech, Nebraska, Alabama
00: Oklahoma, Florida State, Miami, Washington
01: Miami, Nebraska, Colorado, Oregon
02: Miami, Ohio State, Georgia, USC
03: LSU, Oklahoma, USC, Michigan
1 extra for Alabama, 2 extra for Ohio State, and 2 extra for Oklahoma.

This makes no sense at all. Using that logic, you can't include 2013 either.

Alabama's football success speaks for itself, and I would've just started in '08 if I was doing that.
