Alabama is tough. You can argue the order easily, but for me it’s Owens for what he did in Berlin in a very hostile environment.

Honorable Mention: John Hannah, Robert Horry, Charles Barkley, Mia Hamm, Evander Holyfield, Ozzie Newsome, Joe Cribbs, Ken Stabler, Early Wynn. There are plenty more that should be listed.

Top 5
5. Satchel Paige
4. Willie Mays
3. Bo Jackson
2. Hank Aaron
1. Jesse Owens

Joe Louis and Carl Lewis were pretty good, too.

If Carl is from AL, he's likely #1.

Joe Louis should be over every one of those except maybe Hank Aaron

Yeah, I knew that but somehow forgot to post them. A top 5 was tough from that group. Feel free to give your top 5. No right or wrong answers.

Arkansas: (If the list is strictly only for on the field athletic accomplishments)

Lou Brock
Brooks Robinson
Sonny Liston
Scottie Pippen
Don Hutson
...

If the list can include those simply in athletics who played, but really made their name with after their playing days, then the list is:

Paul "Bear" Bryant
Jerry Jones
Scottie Pippen
Brooks Robinson
Sonny Liston

It’s actually a myth that the Berlin crowd was hostile toward Owens. There are many interviews where he said the people of Berlin were very nice to him.

He also said some of the loudest ovations of his career came from Berlin

Brief story on it

Sonny Liston
John Daly
Darren McFadden
Scottie Pippen
Joe Johnson/Sidney Moncrief/Corliss Williamson

I know John Daly probably should be removed and replaced by the bottom 3 options, but grip it and rip it.

Got curious and googled Louisiana, found an article from SI done in 99’ listing top 50 sports figures from the state- their list:

1. Karl Malone
2. Eddie Robinson
3. Mel Ott
4. Terry Bradshaw
5. Bob Petit

Had no clue who Mel Ott was - from GRETNA ( westbanker is an auto qualifier for at least top 10)

here is what they had listed:
First National Leaguer to hit 500 homers; drove in 100 runs nine
times during 22-year career with Giants from mid-1920s to late
'40s.

Rounding out top ten:

6. Elvin Hayes - Rayville
7. Lou Brock - Collinston
8. Billy Cannon - Br
9. Robert Parish - sport
10. Willis Reed - Bernice

Funny to see 3 of the top 10 being basketball players from NW LA- an area of the state that ain’t exactly what you would think of as basketball country.

Don't forget Arkansas has Bill Clinton and Johnny Cash. Both could swing a stick like no other.
