All else equal, who is choosing Rice over Vanderbilt?

Are all things equal? I’m sure there is plenty Rice does better than Vandy and Vandy does better than Rice. Rice is located in one of the largest cities in the US and the energy capital of the world. So much opportunity.

Georgia? Florida? Seriously?

Rice might suck the meat missile in football... but that is a school that turns out a lot of successful graduates. With no insult intended to Vanderbilt.

Yea, I have to admit, Florida is great at school and at athletics, and Missouri is not.

UGA has far higher admissions standards than SMU, Richmond, and Miami. They are ranked ahead of UT-Austin in U.S. News and their SAT scores eclipse that of UF (not stating that it is definitively better).
Perhaps this was just my high-school in Palm Beach, but anyone with a pulse and money was automatically admitted into Miami, SMU, and Tulane.

I mean, I'd expect colleges that give thousands of scholarships out to be more competitive to get in to...

Perhaps SMU or Miami deserve to be top 25, but I find it difficulty to justify their tuition. In Florida, UF and maybe even FSU are more prestigious. In Texas, UT, A&M, and maybe even Baylor and TCU are all better than SMU.

For the life of me, I've never understood why a public school would want to be exclusive. I was always a proponent of open admissions. If you could cut the work, you stayed in, if you couldn't, you were culled out.
Graduation rates as a measure of success seemed like a joke. If a school is motivated to have a high graduation rate, they will graduate their students. With open admissions, there is pressure to get kids out. Thus there is competition among students to stay in school. The university isn't coddling them and trying to get them to stay.
