ESPN

quote:

Alabama quarterback Bryce Young, who has yet to start a game in his young career, has already signed deals using his name, image and likeness that are worth more than $800,000, according to sources.

However, Young has been presented -- but has yet to accept -- deals worth well in excess of $1 million, sources told ESPN.

Alabama coach Nick Saban sent shock waves through college football last week when he told a group of Texas high school coaches that Young, a sophomore, was set to make "almost seven figures."

However, Saban declined to elaborate on the nature of those deals and would not say who the deals were with, leading to speculation about the actual amount and why he chose to talk about it so publicly.

Stanford coach David Shaw said at Pac-12 media days this week that Saban mentioning Young's worth was no accident.

"It's obvious to me that Nick wanted to plant that and make sure people knew that," he said. "It's a great way to recruit people to come to you."

This is going to be insane.

"We need to even the playing field and give athletes the freedom to earn money!"

A QB who has yet to start a game at the #1 program in the country makes nearly 7 figures and it is used as a recruiting tool by that program.

"No, not like that!"

"Is this what we want football to be?" Nick Saban opines.

"Yes!!" they reply giddily.

...some time later...

"This is not faaiirrrr!!! You're ruining college football!!1!"

There's nothing unfair about this. I hope an athlete can get paid if they can.

Now, the offensive linemen better be getting a cut from Bryce.

Wait until the Catholics or Bill Knight outbid Alabama. The institutions with large alumni bases and deep pockets are about to turn CFB into an all out bidding war.

How long before a significant number of athletes are clearing more than assistant coaches?

Why would there be a cap on what someone can earn on their own name, image, and likeness? What is different in a cap from a prohibition?

The free market and ROI will be the only cap.

Once Texas finds the right coach, Texas should do well in the SEC. Deep, deep pockets.

Just imagine if:
Bryce is "affected" by the distractions of all his NIL commitments and his performance is not to his ability.

How quick does Saban pull him out and put in the back up? Now, all these NIL dollars are pissed because their client is riding pine! Knowing Saban an his "I don't give a shite about anything else but my team", the leash will be short for anyone who underperforms, NIL money be damned. Interesting times ahead fellas!

If you "baws" ever want to win a game against someone other than Vandy, you'd better get the Waltons, Tysons or Hunts on the line ASAP.

These are effectively one year contracts. You dole out the cash to land the recruit. If he's a bust, no NIL money in year 2.

Or maybe you bring in 2 QBs and whomever doesn't get the starting role immediately hits the transfer portal for another payday.

It will be no time before the rule about sitting a year will be legally challenged. And it too will lose in court. Then the entire NCAA is annual free agency.

They need to disassociate NIL sports from the universities. There is no point in this being associated to the university anymore, they are paid athletes. Purge our universities of this pseudo communist bullshite and degree printing. Universities are a fricking joke.

I know, they were already getting paid, but this makes it official.
