First round of the playoffs happened last weekend. Consider it a regional semifinal game. LSU and Bama competed to represent the SEC West. Winner advances.

LSU will eventually move on to the Regional Championship against possibly UGA for a chance to move on to the national semifinals.

That's the way this was set up to be. It keeps the regular season games important.

( Of course this is with the assumption that LSU doesn't shite the bed before the end of the season. And if they do Bama advances)

I've always said to do a 6 team playoff.

Let the SEC champ and other top champ (Big Ten or ACC usually) get byes. This gives the Big 12 & Pac winners a chance to make the playoff and lessens the never-ending debate on the 2nd SEC team.

One loss Oregon. That would mean they won their conference

Or Baylor. They would have a win over a top 10 team and won their confrence

I like keeping it at 4 too. Basically requires you to go undefeated or have 1 loss at most which keeps college football regular season the best in sports. 8 teams or more and you will have two loss teams in every year which starts diluting the intensity of the regular season too much.

It would be better for college football.

The plan is to eliminate the rent a wins from the regular season.

1. SEC Champ
2. Big 10 Champ
3. ACC Champ
4. Pac 12 Champ
5. Big 12 Champ
6. At Large
7. At Large
8. At Large

First round of games is played at the home field of the highest seed.

That way conference championships MATTER.

Ok so lets hypothetically say the 3 at large have a loss to someone already in the top 5. Why do they get a second shot. Youre taking away the importance of that regular season matchup.

8 teams does the opposite. You can just win against all the cupcakes you want in blowouts and make it with 2 losses to your tough conference foes. Playoffs need to be tough to get into. This isn't basketball where a William and Mary can pull upsets and need a shot to get in.

Disagree

1) The game last Saturday was HUGE because of these ramifications. Yes, LSU would still want to beat Bama. But, it would absolutely not be a big deal to have lost (it would mean NOTHING to Bama now beyond the pride thing)

2) All this discussion is a GOOD thing for college football.

Then, make sure Bama does not go in over Oregon. By selecting Oregon, they are not "punished" for scheduling Auburn and Bama IS "punished" for scheduling Duke.

Reopen thread

Problem is this year it should be:

1. SEC Champ
2. Big 10 Champ
3. Big 12 Champ
4. AAC Champ
5. ACC Champ
6. At Large
7. At Large
8. At Large

AAC is comfortably rated higher than the ACC and Pac 12 (ACC just barely edges out Pac 12 for 5th). Why award the PAC 12, which is mostly garbage and has been trending that way for the better part of a decade, with an autobid? ACC is trending that way too for the record.

So because one division in one conference has two teams play that help alleviate one, sometimes, we should abandon the idea of including more deserving teams nationwide ?

If you're trying to make an argument against Bama or troll Gumps, you might try something logical.

Somebody that can win their conference, or even just their division. And neither one is Alabama this year.

It would be GOOD FOR COLLEGE FOOTBALL.

You are drawing in interest from all of the country when you have a system set up that puts in 1 team from each major division. Your one example is aimed at just the SEC and the southern interest.

College football is getting close to becoming southern dominated which is not good for the sports OVERALL popularity.

I hate most of the teams im about to list but College Football would Nut and self impload if you had the following in a hypothetical 8 team playoff (Not how the teams actually are this season):

1. LSU
2. Ohio State
3. Clemson
4. Texas
5. USC
6. Notre Dame
7. Alabama
8. Michigan

I think it’s fine at 4. Sometimes, like this year, there’s a massive drop off after 1 and 2. I doubt we ever have a year with 8 teams that can realistically claim to be number 1. The more the playoffs expand the less the regular season matters and that’s what separates college football from other sports. Georgia was 5th last year, does anyone actually think they were the best team?

If Baylor finishes as an undefeated conference champion and they put a one loss non champion in the playoffs over them that would render the whole thing a sham
