Maybe he was always a good coach, but the where is as if not more important than the who.

Did Miles won a NC at Oklahoma State?

Did Chavis field elite Ds at A&M?

He just won 1.5x as many games in one season at LSU as he did in 3 seasons total at Ole Miss. The programs arent comparable at all.

Bingo. His success at LSU just shows the difference in the programs.

LSU is just different. Three titles under three entirely different staffs in under 20 years proves this to be true.

It's about the job as much as the head coach. Last three LSU head coaches have won national championships. Of the six active head coaches who have won titles, four coached at LSU this century (Jimbo Fisher was OC in 2003).

Mack Brown coached at LSU as an OC, but that was in the stone ages of 1982 so I won't count that one.

If you are counting current head coaches that won titles as a head coach or assistant I believe there are more than six. Saban, Smart, Pruitt, McElwain, Kiffin, Dabo, Les, Orgeron, Fisher, and Aranda all come to mind. There are probably more.

He could have been a good head coach but he’s not a miracle worker. He did build a roster that carried Houston freaking Nutt to 2 cotton bowls. Oh well worked out well for my side.

It took about 5-6 top teams losing in the final 2 weeks for LSU to even be in contention in 2007 and that’s after Arkansas slapped them in overtime. Don’t pretend like that national championship wasn’t literally one of the worst national championship teams in football history led by an imitation Larry Coker.

Bama backed into the 2011 NCG too. So what's your point? It's what you do when you get there that matters, correct?

Orgeron admitted he did a bad job as HC at OM. He didn't delegate and handle personnel well. He said he handled the HC job like a DL coach and it created a toxic environment. To his credit he has been able to identify his strengths and weaknesses and become a better coach.

That being said, I still believe in the "right coach, at the right place at the right time theory". He's where he needs to be and there's no guarantee he could replicate this elsewhere. I do think he has learned enough to be successful in another HC gig, but I don't know how successful.

Bama didn’t even win their division in 2011 or 2017 and in 2012 it took undefeated Ohio state being on probation for them to make the championship game.

The man has a point... if you're going to point out needing things to happen, these are fair.

I would dearly love this to be true.

Combination of factors:
1. Ole Miss is an awful place to learn on the job as a head coach. More losing than learning happens.
2. Orgeron was a micro manager, and had to break that habit.
