The Ultimate Dilema

YOU.... have a son or daughter who is pretty good at a sport... and for whatever reason, you're fav SEC team offers him/her a walk-on spot on the team... a day later, you learn that your rival school is willing to offer a full ride. Now... YOU in this scenario, have enough money saved up to send him/her to wear your colors, but a free ride to wear enemy colors would send all that money to retirement or another kid's education.
What do you do? Would you be able to stomach going to the games and cheering on the hated team.
(in this scenario your favorite school has a significantly better team than you rival hence not getting a full ride from both).
*Let the Child Choose is a cop-out as in this scenario he or she is open to either and wants your input as the tie breaker

You take the full ride. PERIOD. Let them get a graduate degree at your fav school.

Probably the free ride altho when you say rival do you mean #1 rival or just a generic rival?

in your case it would be LSU or Texas or whoever Arky hates the most
ETA: I would absolutely pay to keep my kid away from Auburn... because we BOTH hate that school. (and I don't have another kid to worry about paying for)

Tell my kid that he should go where he wishes and that the cost of his education should not be factor. Go to the team where he feels the most comfortable with the players/coaches.

I think the best advice is the free ride but I'm not sure I would follow it.

I'd imagine that if you could land a scholarship offer at Auburn, you could land one for other schools as well

He/she goes to Auburn and secretly records all the payouts he/she would be receiving. Turns over video to NCAA - Death Penalty for Auburn - /thread.

unless it's gymnastics, basketball, softball or most importantly... football

Assuming my kid grows up in LA and is smart enough to get TOPS
, I'd dish out 40 K to see him/her don the purple and gold over red and white (interpret that however you wish)

I wouldn't want them going to Texas. Any other school is fine.

You use the free ride rival to leverage the other school to give them a scholarship. You know, the norm...

There are other options. If you get a gymnastics offer from Auburn, you'll probably get one from Kentucky and Arkansas. If basketball, probably Georgia and South Carolina. Football... Ole Miss, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Kentucky, ect. But on the assumption that your son/daughter get NO other offers, I'd let them decide, but tell them I'll pay if they want to go to Alabama instead.

I will always be able to afford for my kids to go to A&M. They can pay their own way at tu. Money will NEVER be a reason for them not to have the same diploma as me. There can be many reasons it won't, but cold hard cash ain't one of them.

I love Auburn.
If my kids find a school they want to attend and graduate from I will pay for it.
As long as they are focused on graduating, getting a job, and becoming productive citizens, I will pay for the college they choose.
