The Twitter account that had the old espn highlights of S games sent me down a rabbit hole

And I watched some of those old games extended highlights and such, college football just lacks the pageantry it used to have IMO. I as a Tennessee fan used to get pumped and locked into my couch to watch nearly every SEC game plus many out of conference games(Ie. Penn state vs Ohio state, Texas vs Oklahoma, fsu vs Miami etc.). I just don't have it anymore. Not sure if I just miss keith jackson calling the big games or if I just got older but it for sure seems different. I'll admit it could possibly be Tennessee's lack of production but I really think its deeper than that. Any other 35ish yr olds feel that way?

29 here and I feel similar. Feels way more commercialized and plastic compared to when I was growing up. I guess it felt more authentic but I don't really have a tangible difference to point to as to why I'd feel differently.
Possibly changes in how it's broadcast and what gets the focus on gameday TV. There's also the media's apparent need to try to force a story every week instead of just letting stuff happen organically. I've always felt that there was plenty enough drama in college football that you don't have to go turning over every stone or be disingenuous with context to get an interesting story any given season. The propensity to force stories makes me cringe a bit.

Is this an elaborate, coded message blaming the lack of enthusiasm in college football on Alabama for being dominant and sucking all joy out of the game for fans of other teams?
Frankly, I feel that is what it is. I think it is just as exciting as it ever was. Then again, I don't support a team that is incapable of bringing joy or excitement to anyone.
Maybe that is the difference and you are just reading too much into it. When your team wins consistently, it gets fun again. Trust me.

No, it has nothing to do with alabama or any of the other teams in college football. More than anything I guess i would say I blame the media. Its just much more commercialized and is a shell of what it could be for real fans. I personally think it all started in the 2005 game where they featured McConaughey and will Ferrell opposed to the players.

I'm 37. I love to watch college football just as much now as I always have. Maybe a little more so. But, I fricking loathe almost every announcer/ broadcast. I can't stand to listen to any of them. They seem so unprepared and uneducated. A lot of times just dumb. I'll never forget when Mallett took the field right before halftime against LSU. The idiot announcer said " he'll just take a knee here" and he proceeds to throw a 80 yard TD to Hamilton. Just stfu and see what happens.
Also, replay is useless if everyone in the nation sees the same thing yet the asshats in Birmingham don't.

Okay, man, that's your opinion. My opinion is that you have lost your passion and joy related to football because FatLock the Detective started working with the FBI and the NCAA to single out Alabama and persecute them.
Really, if you think about it, Tennessee is responsible for the rest of college football fans in the nation no longer being able to enjoy football because of Alabama.
Because of Tennessee, Alabama suffered mightily for a decade and this lead directly to the hiring of The Coach. After The Coach arrived at Alabama, the fun slowly drained out of the sport for everyone, and Tennessee is to blame for all of it.

Personally, I have Bama, Ohio St and Clemson fatigue. I'll watch my team, but that's about it.

If ever there were a post proving how narcissistic Bama fans are this would be it.

Well, it's true. When the team you support is a winner, things aren't boring and it doesn't feel like watching sports is no longer fun.
It's great. Trust me on that.

Yes it just seems much more canned and commercialized these days. Part of it is that I've gotten older though I'm sure.
I pine for the old Jefferson Pilot Game of the Week days sometimes, so I don't have much to say on production quality though lol.

Same(34). I love it still and watch it all Saturday. The magic is different though for sure.

It's easy to forget where college football came from. Before the BCS the #1 and #2 AP teams played against each other in a bowl 9 times. That's it, 9 times in the bowl era history. Conferences were married to certain locations that sent them to the sugar, cotton, orange, rose, and getting the 2 best teams on the field to figure it out was virtually impossible.
I remember Alabama having great teams and being apart of that beauty contest and not getting a chance to prove anything. Talk about wearisome.

I think a lot of it is just age. I use to love watching college basketball and the Atlanta Braves too when I was younger. NYD was my favorite day of the year but they’ve spread everything out for more exposure and it kind of dulled things down for that. Same with draft day. I would get drunk as hell the night before and then binge watch it. Life happens and old joys fade away. I still love watching UGA but I don’t spend as much time watching other teams as I did.

ESPN basically running the sport now is a big factor. Nearly every broadcast looks the same and the announcers, outside of a handful, are terrible. It’s looking more and more plastic every year.
Let’s not forget that before the Playoff, you could have a successful season by simply winning 10+ games and going to (and winning) a good bowl. It wasn’t all about the National Championship or Playoff. So a lot of people could get satisfaction during each season. Now it’s all about “Who’s In?” and 50 bowl games.

I think a lot of it is Bama, Clemson, and OSU fatigue. and throwing Notre Dame in there this year. I think ESPN Corporate is just freakin’ lazy and thinks these are the only teams anyone wants to see.

When you aren't one of the Playoff 8 soon, fatigue will settle in once more.
How many Falcon fans we got around here who think the NFL is boring?

Kudos to Bama because they have obviously earned it, but I enjoyed the days when going undefeated involved having to just scrape by a few times against some team you should kill. I’d obviously love Georgia to go undefeated and win every game by 50 but it would almost feel less satisfying. Just my opinion.

So far, pretty much everything you just said about Georgia is pure theory, get back when it happens. Personally scoring 21 unanswered points against Georgia was just as satisfying as beating Florida by less than a TD.

Go back and read his OP arse hat it's not specifically about Tennessee.
It's about bowl games mattering more, way more parity across the country in terms of teams worth a damn.

once upon a time tv networks used to provide a 'telecast' of our college football - which was just basically commentating the natural cultural hype leading up to the game - and the game itself.
now they shove a 'production' down your throat that includes everything not related to what's happening on the football field - along with a narrative of how 'you' should 'feel' about it.
it's hard to draw a timeline of when it all fell apart - but if you had to pick a face as the poster child for networks diluting & ruining the pure product that was a college football game - this would be it.
