The TIE game thread got me thinking....

of how there were seasons where the record for some programs that looked weird such as....
Oklahoma at 5-4-2 in the early 90s.
The Sugar Vols going 9-1-2.
Michigan in 1992 going 9-0-3.
One game in particular I saw which seemed odd was the 1985 Florida tie to Rutgers, 28-28. Florida would go from #3 to #11. Florida would later make it to AP #1 going into the Georgia game.
Any Gator fans on here recall that game? I was only 1yo at the time. Just curious as it’s a result that stands out.

Flarder fans will not admit to recalling that game.
1985: 'Dogs upset No. 1 Gators
The 1985 Florida Gators entered the contest on a roll: coming off an emotional win over the Auburn Tigers, undefeated, and ranked No. 1 in the nation for the first time in school history. This would not be a repeat of the 1984 game, however. As they had done so many times in the past, the Bulldogs spoiled Florida's season, defeating the Gators 24–3 with freshmen running backs Keith Henderson and Tim Worley both rushing for over 100 yards.[66]

It's odd Florida remained in the Top25 after that. Rutgers was not as strong back then as they are today.

Dropping from 3 to out of the polls after not losing a game would be unprecedented and probably unfair. The only time a team has ever dropped that far in one week was when Michigan lost to Appalachian State.

Other than Schiano’s team, Rutgers has always sucked. They’re a really bad team now. I hope you were joking.

Would Florida have gone to the Sugar Bowl instead of Tennessee (they beat the Vols) if they hadn't been on probation? I know that LSU took their 1984 bid (didn't do much with it :/)

I remember that year. Rutgers was the toughest team we played that year by far.

There was some year in the late 90s where UF and FSU tied, and ended up playing each other in a bowl game. Maybe the Sugar. But the stadium crew started the scoreboard saying it was the 5th quarter. Some of you FL peeps correct me, but I just remember watching it on an old CRT TV in my den while in high school.

Damn. Now, I feel silly about my joke above. They must have really gotten up for that game.

You are correct. It was after the Choke at Doak in 94

As someone born in the mid 90s, how did ties work exactly? Was there a singular OT period or if the game ended as a tie at 0:00 4th quarter, it was simply declared a tie?
Too lazy to google it

No OT

For post season bowl invitation purposes, ties weren't as bad as a loss, but they definitely lowered a teams' prospects.
Miami got their first National Championship because Tom Osborne didn't want to take any chances with the polls when faced with the chance for a tie, win or loss.

I remember that Florida-Rutgers tie well. It seems like Gator HC Galen Hall started substituting when Florida was up 28-7 and the wheels just started to fall off. I remember reading in the Athlon's SEC magazine about it the next year. They quoted his wife who was saying things like Galen just wanted everybody to play because he such a good guy and stuff like that.

One I always think of is Wisconsin in 2012 going 8-6 that played in the rose bowl
Went 7-5 in the regular season and finished 3rd in their division (when B1G had "leaders" and "legends" iirc) but played in the conf championship game because Ohio State and Penn State were both ineligible.
Went on to cream Nebraska in the championship game and then played 12-2 Stanford in the Rose Bowl and gave them a pretty good game too
