Dooley will never lead Tennessee to the promised land. He'll never even get them to Atlanta...other than maybe the chicken sandwich bowl. The best thing long term is for UT to go ahead and have a crappy season this year so he can be fired. 8-4 or 9-3 is merely delaying the inevitable.

When he is fired, Dave Hart will do an outstanding job with a coaching search.

Regarding HS talent in Tennessee, not only is it not that good, but in-state allegiance to UT is a myth, due in part to sheer geography. Players in Memphis live closer to most of the rest of the teams in the SEC. Washington DC is as close to Knoxville as Memphis is. Columbus, OH, is closer to KNoxville than Memphis is. To be successful at UT, you have to recruit not just regionally but also nationally.

To be fair, Saban was apparently putting out feelers to Bama through his agent Jimmy Sexton during that season because his wife wanted out of Miami. If a coach like Saban was interested in the Tennessee job, UT would have fired Derek Dooley in a heartbeat.

Gruden 2013!!

Well, gentlemen. This looks like it's one of the only good threads going on the SECr right now.

Thats what fans don't understand. Bama got lucky Saban was available, just like USCjr did with Spurrier. There honestly aren't any big name coaches on the market right now. None.

True that. I'm getting tired of the whole Petrino situation. Either fire the guy or announce that he's going to be retained as HC.

I think Arkansas has a good chance to fade back into nothing, which you technically still are since you've brought nothing to the SEC football table since you've joined.

That's not true. Clint Stoerner brought the Vols a national championship.

Petrino could be a possibility soon.

I know you guys were in a bad place when Coach Kiffen bolted on short notice, but I didn't think at the time Coach Dooley was going to be the answer. I thought it would have been a good move to bring Coach Fulmer back for a season and take the time to find a better candidate

I guess Tennessee's waiting for Pete Carroll to be available in 2013.

Dooley has had two rebuilding seasons, it takes time. Especially with the mess he was given from Kiffin and Fulmer.

Brady Hoke record at Ball State- 34-38
Al Golden at Temple- 27-34

It took Spurrier 5 years to win more than 7 games in the regular season at USCjr. It doesn't happen overnight.

In state talent is a lot better than you think it is.

Georgia 65 (21.2%)
Florida 40 (13.0%)
Texas 33 (10.7%)
Mississippi 31 (10.1%)
Alabama 25 (8.1%)
Louisiana 21 (6.8%)
Tennessee 20 (6.5%)

That was from last year. Tennessee had 20 Sec signees last year.

It is not all that uncommon things get worse before they get better when a coaching change happens, I am not convinced UT will be a powerhouse next year but I am equally unconvinced they will be awful.

Its not fair to judge Dooley until this year. He hasn't been given a fair chance. We have only gotten redshirt about 5 guys the past 2 years because depth has been so bad. Ut finally has SEC size this year.

By the same token, while UT may not be a powerhouse next season, I'm pretty convinced that it's simply a matter of time until they become one again.

ETA: And we can finally dispense with all this horseshite about Arkansas replacing Tennessee on the Big Six.

The worst thing to happen to Tennessee is for Dooley to fail. Recruiting will go straight down the drain and UT will have restart the process. Fans should be praying he is the answer because if he's not, our recruiting class will go straight down the drain this year.

It took a then unknown Nick Saban 4 years until he got Michigan State to 9-2

1995 Michigan State 6–5–1
1996 Michigan State 6–6
1997 Michigan State 7–5
1998 Michigan State 6–6
1999 Michigan State 9–2

Cycle. It's a proven fact that CFB is cyclical. It's only a matter of time before UT is going to be back, and the East will eventually be competitive again.

Les Miles at Okie State

2001 Oklahoma State 4–7 2–6
2002 Oklahoma State 8–5 5–3
2003 Oklahoma State 9–4 5–3
2004 Oklahoma State 7–5 4–4

Not exactly spectacular.
