y'all need Georgia to falter so you can swoop back in. the 90's UT flourished while Georgia was stuck in neutral or reverse in a cataclysmic cluster frick of leadership. richt isn't great by any means but recruiting-wise he has absolutely stabilized the region and now it is increasingly difficult for UT to compete with them and all the others that rely so heavily on GA

Oh, I've been over it. You guys have lost long enough for it to be water under the bridge as far as I'm concerned. It's time for you guys to get off your asses and start winning 10+ again so that our rivalry can take center stage again, like God intended it fricking to.

Tennessee has a football team?
First I've heard of it.

As can be seen from the OP, that is a major concern of mine

yea i didn't mean to be redundant. i honestly think outside UT hiring a fantastic coach the best thing that could happen for UT is UGA going straight to hell. Which Richt isn't really doing, just kinda stalling
but i agree with all you said but i don't wanna sound like i am flaming. i really think that this is a bad time for UT to be in flux and i think it will not be the easiest fix. it can happen but i think the dominance seen in the 90s is a bit of stretch right now, but then again that is tough for any team

Not to sum up your post from 1 sentence but I really don't think we do.
I meant resources in terms of your facilities, budgets, fan support, etc. Mizzou has work to do when if comes to our stadium and budgets, especially for recruiting. As long as Tennessee has those things going for it, coupled with your status as an historical power, it will be a desirable job.

I find myself wondering if we are in a permanent downfall or just the natural cycle of things and was wondering what the rants (serious and honest) thoughts on this are (yes I know this is like the 300th thread on this subject). Normally I would say this is just part of the cycle but there are a few things that have me concerned:
1. This isn't 1995 anymore. We don't have the advantage in TV exposure that UT use to. Most every SEC teams game's are on tv whether your bama or Vandy.
2. Recruiting. Obviously the state of Tenn is not loaded with talent so we use to make up for that by raiding states accross the country such as Georgia and South Carolina. Now a days, Georgia has done a much better job of keeping us out while USC is much more difficult to recruit against than they use to be.
3. Coaching. I know a program can come back from one bad coaching hire but we are looking at 2 in a row and possibly three if we don't find a good one after Dooley (and im not sure we will). Bad hires can set a program back a LONG way (see: Ole Miss).
4. Simple competition. In the 90s we needed to beat UF and that's it we had won the east. Now of course, before then UGA was very good at times but now to win the east we have to contend with UF/UGA/USC/and possibly Mizzou in the future meanwhile Vandy is improving and the west is almost unbeatable.
I know, tl,dr but my basic question: is this part of the cycle or are we going to be down for a long time (15-20 yrs)
Since Richt got to UGA in 01, this has been a glaring weakness for UT. I don't think it's just a coincidence that that was the last season that y'all finished in the top 10.
I think the jury is still out on Dooley - he's had some really bad breaks with calls and injuries (plus a brutal schedule last year) but has also made some really boneheaded decisions at time.
Anyhow, I think y'all go 8-4 this year.

Tennessee passing game should be a good one. Good QB and a nice group of WRs.

Couldn't have said it better myself thus my concern

i think it's warranted, honestly, but luckily for UT no matter how long it takes eventually you will have to find something that works. UT has enough cash and fans for it to at least guarantee they try to overcome the growing issue.
see i am worried because our resources grow but we just waste them. honestly i feel shittier about what we do rather than UT trying it's damnedest

You can call me delusional (and I will understand) but depending on who we beat, with our schedule, I will not be happy with 8-4

Of course, you should never be content with anything less than excellence, particularly from a program as tradition-rich as Tennessee.
The way you would have to look at it is that, while unsatisfying, it would be a step in the right direction.

9-3 if y'all beat us, but what about Bama, @ UGA, and @ SC?

To be honest cash is the only thing I feel good about. I know if we screw up again, or again and again for that matter. We will still be able to pay as much as anyone.

After the past couple years, how in the world could you not be happy with 8-4? I know it's not as good as you'd like, but damn it's a start

I'll gladly take 8-4 too, even if that means losing to UGA and FSU again.
