Why are there so many teams in the tourney again?

And why do so many get excited about sweet 16s and elite 8s..? They literally mean nothing.

Where did you get that info from? And, making it to the second weekend still means a lot. I’ll be thrilled if the Horns get to Elite 8.

My guess when you googled that and tried to sound smart was that you looked at the women’s stat and not the men’s.

Where did you get such woefully incorrect information?

Pretty sure the lowest is 8, though I could be wrong.

8 seed Villanova won it in 85

7 seed UConn beat 8 seed Kentucky in the final in 2014

We needed the biggest comeback in NCAA title game history to beat 8 seed UNC last year

Is there a worse collective of posters when it comes to basketball than Bama fans?

Well you've got UGA posters who think bball supposedly doesn't matter and then you've got LSU posters who think both baseball and WBB are #2 behind football.

In the last 40 years...
Villanova won it as an 8 seed in 1985

UConn won as a 7 seed 2014.

Kansas won as a 6 seed in 1988

Arizona won as a 4 seed in 1997

3 seeds have won it in 2011 (UConn), in 2006 (Florida), in 2003 (Syracuse), and in 1989 (Michigan

And why do so many get excited about sweet 16s and elite 8s..? They literally mean nothing.

They "literally" mean what they say...that you made it to that round in the season ending tournament. Given how difficult it is to win 6 games in a row, all against good teams, in a single elimination tournament, yes teams celebrate sweet 16s and higher.

It's no different than people celebrating NY6/BCS/Alliance Bowls, CFP appearances, CWS appearances, etc. in college sports and division titles, conference titles, etc in professional sports.

The idea that nothing short of a championship should be celebrated is silly. And how much some things are celebrated will be relative to the program celebrating it. A program like Kansas, Duke, Kentucky, etc aren't going to celebrate a Sweet 16 the same way a program like Butler would. And why do we let so many teams in? Well, there are over 350 teams in 32 conferences who play Division 1 basketball. In that context, having 64 + 4 doesn't sound like that many. That, and seeing things like 16 seed UMBC blowing out 1 seed UVA last year. This all pretty common sense stuff TBH
