The last time a preseason AP Poll did not include Auburn, Florida, or LSU was 1979.

The AP Poll is not out yet, but if it is anything like the Coach’s Poll, then neither Auburn, Florida, nor LSU will be ranked to start the season.
I was wondering when the last time that was the case, and the best that I can tell, using college poll archive as a reference, it was 1979, back when it was a top 20, not 25.
I don’t put a lot of credence in preseason polls personally, I just thought that it was interesting that expectations for the upcoming season are so low at three schools that generally have high expectations each season.
Not meant as a flame or a troll, just interesting facts.

I remember the good ol' days when it was the top 20 and not top 25.

Wonder how many of the three will finish ranked?

Tide would repeat as national champions at 12-0-0. USC finished 11-0-1. I bet the Trojan faithful were pissed without being considered despite the tie.

If LSU can beat Florida State and Auburn can beat Penn State, I suspect that the winner of the Auburn-LSU game will set themselves up with a shot to finish ranked if they do well against the middle of the SEC West.
For Florida, it will probably depend on how they do against Kentucky, Tennessee, and South Carolina.

They tied an unranked Stanford that would finish 5-5-1.
A bigger gripe would be the season prior when they beat Alabama head to head. But lost to unranked Arizona State.
Alabama would win the 1978 AP poll. A victory over #1 Penn State in the Sugar Bowl.

LSU will surprise, I think.
Auburn is a crapshoot. I think Harsin is a decent coach but how much have off season shenanigans damaged him with the team?
I expect Florida to disappoint, unfortunately. No animosity there, just how I see it.
My money is on LSU to do the best of the three for sure.

Tide would repeat as national champions at 12-0-0.
Never mentioned as one of Bama's greats but a couple stats
Averaged 345 RUSHING a game
Scored 383 points
Gave up 67 points all season
5 shutouts
The game that sticks out most is the UT game where UT went up 17-0 in the first half and Bama scored 27 unanswered. Only UT with 17 and Auburn with 18, got into the double digit point range.
Thought for sure USC would go unbeaten and they would go to the Rose and Bama the Sugar which would have screwed Bama but...thank you Stanford Cardinal..

Also, USC beat #1 Ohio State in the Rose Bowl which cost the Buckeyes the national title. Alabama was #2 entering New Years Day.

In truth, their schedule was a joke that season. Their OOC opponents that season included Georgia Tech, Baylor, Wichita State, and Miami. Compare that to the season before where we played Nebraska, Missouri, USC, and Washington out of conference. That doesn't even include a Top 10 LSU team and #1 Penn State in the Sugar Bowl.
Alabama struggled in every game where they played a ranked team in 1979. Tennessee gave us a run four our money, Auburn played us tough the whole game, and Arkansas was very scrappy in the Sugar Bowl though we pulled away in the third quarter. LSU held us to a single field goal in Tiger Stadium.
After struggling against Auburn, we fell to #2 in the AP behind Ohio State but remained #1 in the Coaches going into the Sugar Bowl. Had the Buckeyes not lost to USC in the Rose Bowl the national championship for 1979 likely would have been split again as OSU was undefeated at that time.

Wow, no Ohio St? They got up to #1 but lost by 1 point in the Rose Bowl.

Last time a FL team wasn't in the preseason AP poll was 1974.
