The Gene Stallings Era started this afternoon in 1990

seemed like a "safe hire" which would unite the fanbase after the weird Curry era. But after 0-3 folks weren't so sure.
Of course he turned it around with excellent football from 1991 unitl his retirement including a national championship.
All around heckuva man,too.

For the love of God, bring back suits on the sidelines

Imagine this board if a new Bama coach started 0-3.

Great pic of Bebes, used to love seeing him on the sidelines, in a coat & tie, and wearing brogans

He’d never get the chance to go 11-1 and 13-0 the next two seasons.

Gene Stallings is an outstanding man.

In hindsight he was a solid hire but I'm sure there were more than a few Alabama fans who looked at his record as a head coach and worried he'd be a below average head coach. He had had only one winning season as a college and professional coach. His saving grace was that he was one of Bear's boys. When he started 0-3 in 1990 I'm sure there were quite a few people out there who believed he was living up to his reputation as a sub-par coach. Absolutely no one saw him upsetting #3 Tennessee that season and no one saw him going 11-1 in 1991.
The dude was a below .500 coach before arriving at Alabama and yet averaged right at 10 wins per season in his seven seasons at Alabama.

God A&M is such a shite job

Teas A&M: Jackie Sherrill, another of Bear's boys, was the only one I remember having really good success.

R.C. Slocum had more success than Jackie. 123 wins in 14 years as a head coach. Plenty of Top 10 finishes and conference titles.
He just could not win big games. His bowl record was awful and so we cashiered him for the bag of magic beans that was Coach Fran . . . "A better recruiter than Mack Brown and a better game-day coach than Bob Stoops."

It was much dogshittier when Stallings was there. You had SWC conference rivals in their heyday, the school had only just started admitting women, and the Corp had Vietnam to look forward to after graduation. All that makes for a tough sell when Texas was winning national championships and there were titties and beer to enjoy in Austin.

RC Slocum. I knew about RC and believed he was a decent coach. I didn't realize his record was better than Sherrill's.

AH! The good old days! back when it had only been 10 years since 1980.

Just need a little patience like the Cubs did in baseball.

Sherrill had a major rebuild and his first three seasons were .500 affairs. He then had his three year hot streak with the high profile of thumpings of Bo Jackson/Auburn and Tim Brown/Notre Dame.
He coached twice as long at Moo State as he did at A&M.

I was at 1998 Alabama at LSU. My father and brother are Alabama fans.
It was a heart breaker, but a family friend from hunstville got a Tigerstadium poster signed by Stallings after speaking with Ruth. Ruth and Johnny were standing in near the locker room.
I got the poster signed by Curley earlier. Stallings saw the signature and told me this:

Interesting stat about Stallings while he was coaching A&M. His only Bowl Victory was over the Bear and Bama in 1968. Bear carried him off the field. Pretty funny.

No shite, some of these coaches looks like they are coaching in their pajamas. I expect to see shorts in the next 5 years

Back then they were so interested in any tie to Bear Bryant, they would have hired the guy that shined his shoes. I’m glad we finally got away from that.
