LSU, as a newly established power in CFB and in the first season under new head coach Les Miles, made the trip to Bryant-Denny Stadium at 7-1 and ranked 5th in the nation. After a few down years the Tide were rolling again at 9-0 and ranked 3rd. This was the first ever top 5 matchup between the two programs (there have been 6 since).

College gameday was in the house and the crowd was rocking as Bama was in control early, taking a 10-0 lead into halftime with 207 yards on offense to only 72 for LSU. The Tigers got back into the game converting a 4th and goal on the opening drive of the 2nd half to cut the lead to 10-7. Bama went 3 and out on the ensuing drive and LSU converted a FG to tie it at 10 late in the 3rd quarter.

The defenses controlled the rest of regulation and LSU missed a potential game winning 49 yard FG with 1 min left. With 2 seconds on the clock and on LSU’s 49 Bama threw a swing pass that looked like it may go all the way before finally being tackled inside the 10 and the game goes to OT tied at 10.

The Tide had first possession in OT, going 3 and out and converting a FG to take a 13-10 lead. On 3rd and 6 from the 11 future #1 NFL draft pick Jamarcus Russell scrambled out of the pocket and fired a TD pass to Dewayne Bowe for a 16-13 win in this largely forgotten SEC heavyweight battle.

This was a good game but Bama had a bunch of 10-7 games that year and were not nearly as good as that record was but a good game nevertheless.

The game that sticks out most that season as a Bama fan is going to Auburn with a team that could compete for the first time since the "death penalty" had been given to Bama and being down 28-7 at halftime. Croyle sacked 11 fgn times that day.

Remember it well, me and a few neighbors took a break from working on houses to listen on the radio. We had no way to watch on TV. Was a good season, loved when they wiped out Miami in the bowl game.

To be fair, Auburn was still riding the momentum from their national championship the year before.

Made the 2008 game so much sweetie. That’s the game that really made the Aubies high on themselves and led up to the fear the thumb game. 2008 was such a sweet blowout.

Bama beat the dogshit out of us that year. Most people only remember the Protho injury.

Imagine if Bama had won out, an undefeated SEC team would've been left of out of the BCS title game in back to back years.

Alabama's 2005 defense was statistically the best defensive unit the SEC had produced since the 1992 Alabama squad. Unfortunately it was saddled with a Shula/Rader offense, whose plan A was "just throw it to Prothro" (admittedly a pretty good plan) and whose plan B after he got hurt was "Elephant package."

Because Bama/Florida 05 showed what Bama could be. That 05 team with Prothro was damn good but they still would’ve finished third behind Texas and USC.
