Why was there an influx of UGA fans all of a sudden? And I'm totally fine with that. We didn't have a whole ton before.

Have you ever noticed that the nice fans from all of the schools recognize that all of the other schools have nice fans, and the crappy fans always assume that all (or most) of the other fans from all of the other schools are crappy?

we just went through the worst influx of new posters for as long as I've been a member, and an UGA fan is bashing another fan base.

So this ^.

I've met more good people than bad from all of these schools. Doesn't mean I don't hope we whip their team's arse when we play and enjoy it immensely when we do or even get pissed when we lose. Hell, losing to Alabama last year, a game I knew we had a snowball's chance in, pretty much ruined that whole week for me. However, the level of Schadenfreude some fans (and we certainly have our share like everyone)seem to live for boggles my mind.

I am definitely sad when we lose, and some losses are more demoralizing than others. The Auburn game in 2010 was demoralizing. You want your team to do well, and I love the state/institutional pride.

That said, I sometimes wonder if certain people pick football because they don't have other stuff to rely on to give them self esteem or an identity. And since those fans are spewing the same garbage wearing different colors, it makes you wonder if their hate is really just their own self loathing when they fail to see the redeeming qualities in other fans.

I think there is a huge identity component to it. Social identity theory studies often research how people tend to form who they are by differences from an out-group vs. similarities to an in-group.

There is a euphoria to being there for a close win around other people with whom you share some connection. It's an amazing feeling and a high I imagine we all chase to some degree. I mean, we wouldn't watch sports otherwise I wouldn't think. I can see pregame shite-talk being a way to extend that feeling after the game for which ever side wins.

That's my stab at pop-psyche for today at any rate.

Inkeeping with social identity theory, there was an interesting segment on NPR years ago talking about the correlation between the demographics of the South and the relationship to college football fan behavior. Someone was making the connection between the brutality and territorial pride associated with the Scottish Clans (and similar behaviors in other parts of Europe), where those populations settled in the United States, and how the behavior may be more acutely hardwired into the later generations.

I love stuff like that though.

That's interesting; I'd like to something on it.

I guess that means that the other conferences are the English. Anglo-Saxon trash all of them!

It's especially endearing when you see how LSU fans react and then think about who settled Louisiana.

although UGA looks like a solid team with great young talent, how can their fans talk shite? When's the last time UGA won anything of significance? I don't think UF is that good (LSU and UF fan here), but they can certainly afford to be more arrogant than the Dawgs.
