When I was there George Bush the 1st was running for president and came to campus. The Salute gun battery gave him a 19 gun salute (similar to the one above). We're standing in formation on the parade deck and one of the Sr's in the back said, "Ya know, I bet that really pisses off the neighbors." Let's just say we lost discipline for a few seconds...

Back in the day, before they banned alcohol on campus and you could get a beer at the student union, a cadet took the cue ball from one of the pool tables and dropped it down the barrel of one of the salute guns.
When they fired the salute gun later that week at parade, the gunner failed to check the breach for obstructions (a required step before firing them). Fortunately, it hit the facade of one of the academic buildings on the far side of campus pulverizing itself upon impact. You could still see the damage to the building when I was there ages ago.

The last time we visited Charleston we went to The Citadel to take in a baseball game. It is awesome campus and it is tucked right into downtown with high rise hotels and neighborhoods all around it. I bet it does scare the shite out of them.
