Thamel: When you hire unqualified ADs, you get what’s happening at UT and South Carolina

When you hire an unqualified athletic director Part 1: You get what’s happening at Tennessee, where Phillip Fulmer bid against himself to give Jeremy Pruitt an extension and raise this offseason. It’s a classic move for a novice AD. On the West Coast they call this “pulling a Lynn Swann” for his Clay Helton extension. Pruitt’s buyout is more than $12.5 million, which considering the miserable state of Tennessee’s finances before the pandemic would seem to be untenable. But with Tennessee, emotion and meddling boosters have long won out over logic. The Vols are 2-4, and there’s a clear path to a 3-7 finish. If there’s one thing we’ve learned about Tennessee the last dozen years, a complete administrative mess is the baseline expectation.
When you hire an unqualified AD Part 2: South Carolina’s exhaustive AD search ended down the hall with their baseball coach, a 1980s way of thinking that’s gotten them the predictable underwhelming results. The tell if South Carolina is motivated to fire Will Muschamp in 2020 will be if they oust Ray Tanner, the overmatched athletic director, in the next few weeks. If he’s abruptly ousted soon, South Carolina could in theory find a replacement to work with the new coach. But time is running out. They’ll also have to find more than $13 million to buy out Muschamp, who was Tanner’s pick as head coach. South Carolina has long lagged behind its SEC brethren in athletic department sophistication. Can president Bob Caslen, hired in 2019, pull all this off amid a pandemic? If 2-4 turns to 2-8 for the Gamecocks, they’ll be increasing noise to make moves. Hopelessness is expensive, too.

There are fans wanting to after Turnipseed, Clemson's former AD, along with Napier, Clemson's former OC.
They'd have a fit and raise absolute hell in the upstate. Dabo would be pissed. It'd be worth it just for this aspect of it.

Fulmer has actually done a great job with what he has had to work with. The buyout issue is the one criticism and I doubt Fulmer negotiated it. That is what our technocrats are for. He deals with other aspects of the AD. He signed off on it but coming off an 8 game winning streak and extensions being fairly normal it didn’t look too bad. Thamel is incredibly disengenuous in that piece.
Overall, our AD has improved. Pruitt sucks balls and needs to go. The extension isn’t preventing anyone from getting fired. Willpower is but the money is there and if things get hotter Pruitt will be gone.

He showed some promise the first couple of years. Do you think it's just the qb holding them back or bigger issues?
And why did Sherrer leave? Was he pissed he wasn't DC anymore?

Its happening at Mississippi State too.

Sherrer and others weren’t recruiting. I think that was the main issue but they were very good assistants that we are missing greatly atm. Defensive woes have largely been due to 1. A nonexistent pass rush and 2. Tons of injuries and other issues in the secondary. We also have poor safety play due to the loss of Warrior.
Thing tho is red flags were there last season with Pruitt. We could not line up properly the first two games. This season he has reverted to the offense he forced Helton to run and he refuses to play anyone but JG. I don’t think our offense is anyone’s fault but Pruitt. We called over 4 handoffs in.a row then forced Bailey to throw when we were down 11 and could’ve easily hit a FG. His two ints were squarely on the playcalling which is something I didn’t think possible until I saw it happen.
There are so many little things wrong that it is hard to list them all but Pruitt does not know how to HC and it shows. I honestly wonder how we managed to win the games that we did because we didn’t play well in any of them. Defense was solid last season but offense has been dreadful.
Put it this way., JG played most of the Ark game and when he was hurt we sent in Maurer who looked lost (not the same kid from last season at all) before we finally put in Bailey. Bailey still finished with the most passing yards.
ETA- On a touchscreen so ignore typos and weird autocorrects plz.

Not sure about USC, but UT allowing twitter mobs to make decisions just seems like a bad idea.

Muschamp and Pruitt are the same guy. Too arrogant and stubborn to change what isn't working.

Dude had we hired Schiano you would have pissed in your pants with excitement to run to the rant and give us shite about hiring a coach that was involved in the Joe Pa/Sandusky regime. Now that we didnt hire him that man has a heart of gold and he would have led us to multiple natty's.

That doesnt exactly mean he's a world beater, it also doesnt mean he wasnt possibly enabling some shady shite at Penn state. Im not one of the people in the twitter mob trying to persecute the man or call him guilty but had we hired him we would have been slaughtered on this board and in the media for that move. You have to remember we were still in the middle of a title IX investagation at the time. If were going to go that route we might as well have brought in Briles. He's a way better coach than Schiano. Yall just like getting your licks in because pruitt sucks, which no one is doubting.

It was lose/lose for us, which is typical on the rant. Hire Schiano, get blasted for harboring a pedo. Don't hire Schiano, we are dumb rednecks who don't know what's best for us. IMO Schiano would not be a cultural fit at UT, and he was too similar to Butch Jones and no one wanted that again. Not to mention the negative recruiting aginst him by other SEC coaches (hey prospects mom, did you hear Schiano was at Penn State during all the diddling? food for thought). Hindsight is always 20/20
Also, why the hell would we want to hire the coach that the rest of the SEC wants us to hire, when their objective is to beat us every year? I want the rest of the SEC to be pissed at whoever we hire.
That being said, I have my doubts about Pruitt (as most have developed lately) and I don't know if he will be able to overcome them. At first I thought he was a straight up football guy who didn't care about anything other than Football (i.e not knowing what asparagus was). At this point i'm afraid he's just a straight-up dumbass.

Muschamp is a shitty coach and Tanner is clearly in over his head. Both need to go.

The possibility of that is like .0001%. Clay Travis literally searched "Schiano" in the Sandusky jury documents and used that to attack him. Just say that you don't want him as a coach bc you don't think he's good enough.

Schiano would not have done any better in the SEC. Same results as now.

Fire J. P. and Tenn will be killing whAt chance it has to regain it's former glory... There is a lot of momentum in the UT FB program and this year has become an outlier or anomaly..
Yes QB play is the main problem, however, the pass protection has at critical times broken down and left JG hanging out to dry..
All things would be fixable under a "normal" football calendar..

I appreciate the answers. I feel like he got rid of a few defensive coaches like Sherrer and Rocker who were good coaches and replaced them with those who aren't very good.
That contract extension looks like a terrible decision at this point.
