Just out of curiosity, rank the following in order of importance to most Texans:
High school football
College football
NFL
Movies like Friday Night Lights would lead you to believe that high school football dwarfs the other two in terms of importance. Just wondering how true that is.

I would say back when that movie was set (late 80’s) high school football really was that popular but not so much any longer. Just my experience as someone who grew up in Plano but have a daughter that went to a 6a high school in Austin recently. For me personally it’s college, nfl, then high school

Importance? Like which team you want to win the most?
I’d probably say college, NFL and then HS.
While Texas HS football definitely has a lot of fans in the stands, I don’t think THAT many people really care about the high school team winning or losing. It’s more of just the thing to do on Friday nights and these cities & schools are getting so populated that it results in more fans at the games. You probably have more passion for it in the small towns that Friday Night Lights depicts.
I’d say that most Texans are more passionate and result-driven for their college team or the Cowboys/Texans than the local HS.

For me its college>High School>NFL.
To me, it seems High School football is more important to the long term residents of the state, who have roots going back a couple generations while meaning less to the newer residents.
Hopefully the newer residents will embrace the culture of High School football but I kinda doubt it.

I think you nailed the order, especially in the smaller towns with just one school. College and the NFL probably tick up in importance the larger the city gets.

The pros have displaced college football. There's no question about that. Before pro football, everyone picked a favorite college team to follow. Now, not so much. However, so many more folks go to college now that there will always be a strong college following.
Given the urban preponderance of population, I'd say it's pro, college, high school.

High School football in Texas is just like anything else. If the team is really good, the whole town turns out. If not, the turnout is more lukewarm.
Suburban football is unique in Texas because they are able to produce huge HS crowds. Most places, suburban people don't have the attachment to the suburban schools because they are from somewhere else. But in Texas, high school football seems to overcome that.

I wonder if integration is why high school football is losing its popularity in Texas since it is a southern state. They probably clung to their all white or mostly white teams and lost interest when blacks took over. I know Kentucky experienced a similar thing in high school basketball according to people from there and wondered if it is a southern thing.

That would have been an interesting discussion in the 1960s.
We are 6 decades removed and no one really cares anymore.

I live in a suburb of Dallas, still a plenty big city and high school football is huge here. Obviously not as much to transplants like me but if you go to local restaurants here you might see cowboys stuff or some college stuff if it’s a sports bar/ restaurant. But you see their high school stuff everywhere, they are definitely priority here. The citizens of this town, whom already had high property taxes, signed off on the city building a 65 million dollar full bowl football stadium for the high school.

From a Saints and Tigers fan, apparently the Cowboys aren’t America’s team anymore ????

College for sure, then could care less about about NFL or high school. But that’s just me

High School
College
NFL
My opinion might be out of line as my son is currently playing high school ball. His team made it to the region finals last year at a 4A school. Hell of a lot more fun than any college football I’ve seen and I love college ball. I could understand lack of interest in high school football if you have no community ties through the local high school.

Depends on where you are
If you're in rural East or West Texas, high school football is king. But the Cowboys are still king statewide.
Me personally, I enjoy college and high school football much more than the NFL. The defensive talent in the NFL is such that most QBs look completely inept and the bottom half of the offenses in the league are unwatchable. The relatively inferior defensive talent at the lower levels allows games with average and even below average QB play to still be entertaining. The most boring football in existence is an NFL game between two teams with poor QB play.

R U serious? What stat do you have that shows Texas high school football is declining? Season tickets holders have been renewing in my area of DFW suburb Richardson (four high schools) for the past two weeks. Application for prospective buyers start on Monday. It is that way across the state.
btw Texas does not identify as a Southern state. We are Southwest.

All depends on the crowd you hang with. With parents it’s high school and so on and so on.
Bottom line Football is all over big in Texas period all levels.
One of the reasons I was happy to have the Aggies join in 12’ allowed more coverage here in Texas. Now living in Austin and having Texas join us in same League is gonna be causing some hurt feelings around here it’s gonna be fun.

Port Neches Groves high school in Port Neches had an 18 year waiting list for season tickets at one time. Still have a long waiting list.
High school is under the radar absolute king.
