This comes from On3. The question Del Conte got at the SEC meeting was how does horn balance athletics and student life. This was his reply:

quote:

“You think about public institutions, arguably a top-five public institution in the country. When you look at the kids that come to the University of Texas, the decisions they’re making at the end of the decision is Cal, it’s UCLA, it’s Texas, it’s Michigan, sometimes (North) Carolina, but we’re really in that quadrant of who we’re with. To get into the school you have to be in the top six-percent of your high school. So the type of kid we get — we always tell our student-athletes when they go to school there you’re competing against the very best in the fields, but in the classroom, they’re the very best in the country you have to compete with academically. We’re always mindful of the balance of both. We have a saying at Texas, the winning tradition of the University of Texas should not be entrusted to the timid or the weak. That applies to the classroom and the playing fields because who we play matters. We played Arkansas two years ago, you were at that game, it was the wildest game. I’m walking through the tunnel and I look over at Commissioner Sankey and he goes, ‘how about that?’ I go, ‘that was the greatest thing ever.’ We lost the game, we knew, but Steve also said here’s what we have to do to get prepared for that game. That game was fantastic because it gave us a barometer of what we need to do offensively and defensively on the lines. Gotta get big dudes.”

Can someone tell me what point he’s trying to make with this answer? Is he implying that admission standards for athletes at Austin are higher?

I liked how he managed to work in Arkansas at end lol

Apparently he doesn't know that UF is ranked ahead of UT.

UF is a great school.

But I'd like to know how they went from #50 in 2017 to #29 in 2023. New US News editor a Gator?

We're also #6 public in Niche rankings. Again, ahead of Texas.

My favorite part: “the decisions they’re making at the end of the decision is Cal, it’s UCLA, it’s Texas, it’s Michigan, sometimes (North) Carolina, but we’re really in.” Lol

What a crock of shite.

Is that why they offered Jamaal Charles who couldn’t read in high school? Maybe they let him compete with the other players coloring with crayons in the back of the class…

No idea what this is. Again, UF is a good school. I'm curious what makes it better than Texas. Every department based ranking I can find has Texas far ahead. I'm genuinely curious, what are UF's strengths, and how'd they move ahead 21 spots in 6 years in a list that is typically quite static.

And doesn't know that Vanderbilt, Texas' daddy, is ranked ahead of both of you.

Academics shouldn’t wing quotes. They rarely work.

Or that UVA exists, or a half dozen other U of California campuses.

Well you should probably find a new conspiracy because FSU has moved up a bunch since 2017 too.

I know it’s a lot of alters to keep track of, but next time sign out and have UGAAlum or GAT talk about UTSA. NFLSU already used that material.

Sorry, I didn’t mean to disrespect your alma mater, UTSA.

I’m sure your Liberal Arts/Sports Management degree is paying off though

You have to be top 6% of your high school to get into Texas. That eliminates 94% (stay with me here I know math is complicated) of the pool of applicants who want a great education from a top 10 public university.

If a kid wants to go and can't get in, he can go to another university and transfer after he shows he can make the grades. Why would that be a bad thing? How does that diminish the quality of education?

However, the specific departments and programs are hard to get into as well, so even if admitted it is rare a high demand major like computer science will be available to them.
