Texas A&M's Impressive Run Defense

Texas A&M has very solid run defense stats this year (#15 nationally in YPA at 3.13). However, what is even more impressive is that they have done it against the following teams (P5 YPA rank)
- #1 Clemson (6.96)
- #10 Alabama (5.44)
- #11 Kentucky (5.36)
Those rankings include down performances vs A&M. Without them, you might be looking at 3 of the top 5/6 rush teams in America. Texas A&M held those 3 teams to at least 1.5 YPA under their average vs other P5 teams
- #1 Clemson (-4.25)
- #10 Alabama (-1.45)
- #11 Kentucky (-3.10)
That is damned impressive work. Keep in mind A&M finished #55 in 2017, #63 in 2016 and #103 in 2015 in YPA allowed per rush.
Well done Mr. Elko.

After our game with them, I was very surprised our running game struggled so much, which worried me for our future. This makes me feel a little better. A&M's rush defense has looked fantastic

Didn't get to watch the Alabama game, but saw almost all of the Clemson game, and that was the thing that was most impressive. They shut their run game down largely... (edit) Over 4 yards less per carry than their P5 average is damn good work.
Kentucky matchup seemed less to do with aTm and more to do with Kentucky OC being an idiot in that game... but still... perhaps it was just based on what they made seem "available".

We are selling out to stop the run. Elko moved an interior DT (Keke) outside to the edge and it has proven to cause teams a lot of disruption in the run game. It's a great strategy by Elko to at least try and take something completely away. Since we have been able to do that with a 4 man front and 2 LBs, the game typically comes down to beating our 5 man secondary. All that being said, we don't have an elite pass-rusher or an elite secondary. We have decent pass rush and a very average SEC secondary. Not going to say below average here bc there is NFL talent back there.
To beat A&M, you need elite WRs and at least an above average QB. That is the formula. Will be tough for any of the remaining teams on our schedule to win without forcing turnovers.

We have a very senior and talented DL. Elko walked into a great situation there. However our DBs on the other hand. Well, you look up the Pass D stats and it tells the story. Coming from Wake & ND Elko was known for not giving up the big play.

Now that our run d has unfricked itself, our pass d has decided to shite the bed lately

A&M gives up 114% of Opponent P5 average in Pass Yard Per Attempt
Yep

A&M's run defense is stout.

Pass D includes pass rush. I actually think that is more of the issue than the secondary. Our big SR DL can clog up the middle and shoot the gaps, but we can't get to the QB against the good pass protecting teams. They did against Kentucky so we'll see if they can continue doing that going forward. We also get reinforcements at DE (Clemons) and at DB (Chattman) at some point in the near future.

Il give y’all credit for sure. Your run defense is stout. Our run game has been far less than what we had hoped. You know what that could mean. We tend to make average teams look great and set new records. I dout this will happen to y’all this weekend but of course I hope it does. Ya never know. That’s why they play the game. Good luck. Well after this Sat anyway.

Yep, Mizzou is giving up 72% of opponents average Rush YPA. And, like A&M, is giving up a higher % on passing (118% of opponents average Passing YPA).
Mizzou held
> Purdue (-1.89)
> Georgia (-0.82)
> South Carolina (-1.70)
However, those same teams Passing YPA vs Missoui compared to their average for the year vs P5
> Purdue (+2.69)
> Georgia (+1.39)
> South Carolina (+0.41)

It wouldn’t surprise me if Bama, Clemson, A&M and Kentucky all finish the season in the top 10.

It’ll be a miracle if he’s not hired away as a HC.
I’m holding out hope that he’s cut from the same cloth as a guy like Chavis, and that he simply isn’t interested in a HC gig.

That's way closer to average than i'd have guessed.

Aggies will stop USC's run. The question is Bentley healthy enough to evade the pass rush. I don't think Elko will need to put a spy on him but again, how mobile will the QB be? We are weakest at the corners.
IMHO that will be the key.

Team (vs A&M, P5 avg not including A&M, Difference)
- Clemson (11.00 YPA, 7.13 YPA, +3.87 YPA)
- Alabama (12.60 YPA, 13.83 YPA, -1.23 YPA)
- Arkansas (7.10 YPA, 5.19 YPA, +1.91 YPA)
- Kentucky (5.40 YPA, 7.08 YPA, -1.68 YPA)
So against Alabama it felt awful but Alabama has done that and worse to everyone (it was actually less than average). Clemson was bad. The other 2 were pretty close to avg.

Amazing what a difference cutting Chavis loose makes.
