Terrible way to lose an NCAA Tournament bid

Jackson State went 24-0 in the SWAC and lost the conference tournament championship game 7-6 to Southern.
Jackson State led 6-4 in the ninth. Southern's bullpen left the gate open and the Jackson State outfielder crashed into it trying to get to a ball. The ball came out of his glove and went over the fence and was ruled a home run. Three run home run.

Damn.
That may be more painful than losing the CWS because everyone called "My Ball!", and they all listened to the others and nobody caught it.
ETA: But seriously, why wouldn't they get a regional invite anyway?
Does a P5 like LSU really deserve one with our record over Jackson STate just because they lost on a fluke?

That about the freakiest walk off I have ever seen. Dude made a great play on the ball to steal the HR and but the door wasn't locked. Lost to a team that was 6 games under 500 on a freak play to miss the tournament.
Its was very "Arkansasian"

In fairness, he jumped over the wall to rob a home run. He didn’t catch it so it should have been ruled a home run. You can clearly see the ball miss his glove and go over the fence. The gate coming open made the play unusual, sure, but I think the correct call was made. Even if it had been ruled a double, the game would have been tied with a runner on second and no outs.

They have some better replays. You do see a ball rolling around in the bullpen but it’s clear the ball went over the glove.

They had a nice season but probably don't have the resume for an at-large. They have a nice program. They beat Southwest Louisiana a few years ago in a regional when they were No. 1 in the nation.

I gaurantee they are.
But do they deserve to be in the tournament?
frick an eye test. accomplishments during the season should decide if a team is in the post season.

This happens every year in baseball and basketball in one-bid leagues when the regular season champ loses their conference tournament. Jackson State was 0-6 in Q1 and Q2 games, 1-1 in Q3 games and 32-1 in Q4 games. Their SOS is 289 out of 294 teams. Multiple SWAC teams should not be going to the NCAAT

SWAC should do away with their tournament to prevent things like this
With that said, I would welcome Southern into the Starkville regional with open arms.

If LSU, or any team for that matter doesn’t get a bid because a SWAC team got an at-large, they just need to disband their baseball program.

Every poster trying to argue against my post, answer this: Do you believe that a team that didn't win their own division in their conference deserves a chance to play in the National Championship or get an invite to the CFP? (Come on LSU fans, tell the truth.)
So why should a team that barely makes their own tournament get more consideration if they fail to win that tournament than a team that lost one conference game in the tournament final?
I think that you must earn a right to play for it all. No matter the sport.
Just looking at a team and saying, "Well, they pass the eye test. They are obviously a better team, so they should be given a spot, even though their season wasn't as successful" is just bullshite.

How did Jackson St earn it? By beating horrible teams and losing all the games they played against halfway decent teams? If the SWAC doesn’t like it, they should just stop having a conference tournament. LSU may be having a down year but they beat that Southern team 16-1

Yes, you fool.
How are you going to sit there with a straight face and say that Jackson State had a more "successful" season than LSU when all but one of JSU's wins came against teams with an RPI of 201+? The best SWAC team of all time would almost certainly be worse than 2010 Georgia or 2002 Kentucky, so running through that conference is nothing to write home about.

I've been at Toyota Field every day this last week to watch the tourney. Not always great baseball but much fun to watch. The tourney was supposed to be in Jackson, Ms., but got cancelled about a month ago. The SWAC officials started searching frantically for a site and found Huntsville and the brand new ball park. Home of the Rocket City Trash Pandas, double A team.
They like it here so much they are working on a four year deal. I went every day and paid $8 a day.

Simple.
First: I didn't make the claim they are a better team. I merely posited that they were a more deserving team.
As many people love to say on here when strength of schedule is brought up: "They can only play the games on their schedule. It's not thier fault their opponents may be weak."
So either strength of schedule matters, or it doesn't. For every sport.
Second: It ain't about who you think is the better team. It's about who's the more deserving team through their yearly accomplishments.
Jacksonville State went undefeated in their conference schedule and missed out because they lost one game in a conference tournament on what could be called a fluke play.
LSU eeks into their conference tournament by beating the worst team in the conference in a rubber match.
But you are going to sit here and make the claim that LSU had the more deserving season? Why?

They lost every single game they played against half-way decent competition. This isn't a situation like UCF going undefeated and gettingg left out of the playoffs. They actually did play games against top 100 teams and were smoked by all of them.

yes it matters. You're the one arguing it doesn'tt.

game winning home runs happen all the time. They play in a one-bid league, always have. They knew what they needed to do to make the NCAAT and failed to do so.

LSU beat 10 top 50 teams. They took the series against a top 15 team on the road. They beat the #1 team in the country in a game. They beat another top 5 team in a game. LSU didn't put themselves in position to get an at-large bid only by beating A&M. If LSU makees the NCAAT, they'll get sent somewhere as a 3 seed, which is what their resume dictates
quote:
Why?
LSU's resume is miles better than Jackson State's. That's why. Teams in this conference that may not make the tournament have better resumes as well.
ANd if you really want to go down this road that they "can only play the teams on their schedule" then I guess Fairfield should be the #1 team in the country hosting a regional since they're 35-1 overall, despite the fact that they've played zero Q1 teams all season.

No.
The ball never went into his glove. He missed the ball. Basically, he jumped up against the wall to try and rob a HR and he couldn’t reach the ball.
A dramatic 3 run HR in the top of the 9th to go ahead, but the gate opening had nothing to do with the play.
