Before 1998, Tennessee claimed only 1 national title, that in 1951. After winning the 1998 title, they claimed 2 titles, 1951 & 1998---until just a few years ago.

Out of the Orange not so long ago, UT all of a sudden was claiming 6 national titles...1938, '40, '50, and '67 to add to their previous total of 2. 1967, in particular, is a joke (UT lost 2 games that year). Remember, they have the right to claim ANY national title as listed in the NCAA Official Records Book, per NCAA. So, I can accept that (many other schools have already done the same).

Now, get this. According to Wikipedia, Tennessee has recently added to their profile another 8 national titles that they say are UNCLAIMED...1914, 1927, 1928, 1931, 1939, 1956, 1985, 1989!! This is now a grand total of 14 national titles Tennessee says they've won, even though they claim only 6.

The thing is...all of these additional 8 years they're adding to their profile, only ONE year of the 8 is even listed in the NCAA Official Records Book (1956). Per NCAA, UT has the right to claim 1956 if they wish (Georgia Tech, Iowa and Oklahoma also are listed as champions that year)--but, where in the world are they getting the other 7???

NONE of them are even listed with the NCAA or any other place. So, how could they be "unclaimed" national titles? No NCAA-authorized polling service or media organization has them even listed as winning in those years.

It's like they've pulled these years out of nowhere and poof!, they have more. Don't know what's going on in the Land of the Great Pumpkin.

I can’t imagine even caring enough about Tennessee to post something like this.

Kinda sad, really.

Alabama has 150 national Tiles. I’m claiming all of them! Even 55-57 when we were coached by our worst coach in history.

I don't know what ncaa source you're looking at, but ncaa.com shows UT with two, that being 1951 and 1998. Still shows UGA with one, 1980.

Since you remain butthurt about Alabama, I'll let you count the years for UA.

The NCAA website does not list all of their champions as listed in the NCAA Official Records Book, which is published every year. It's very expensive to purchase from them and it's very thick. Too much info for NCAA to publish on its website.

However, Wikipedia does list all of the NCAA champions from 1869 to the present including all NCAA authorized polling services and media organizations (selectors) that chose champions for all those years. Just about every year has multiple champions listed of which any school listed may choose to claim or not.

"The NCAA maintains an official records book of historical statistics and records for football. In the records book, with consultation from various college football historians, it has created and maintains a list of "major selectors" of national championships throughout the history of college football along with their championship picks for each season."

Each school's administration makes that decision. However, how to "claim" an "unclaimed" title that isn't listed with the governing body (NCAA), I can't answer that.
