Tennessee's Slow Decline

For the most part, from the origin of the AP Poll in 1936 up until the 1962 season, Tennessee football was at the top of the SEC. Tennessee had the most appearances in the AP Poll of any SEC program for these 25 seasons.
*In 1962, Ole Miss passed Tennessee in total all-time AP Poll appearances, however that was short-lived.
*In 1964, Alabama passed Tennessee in total all-time AP Poll appearances.
*In 1967, Tennessee passed back ahead of Ole Miss for the #2 spot in the SEC in terms of all-time AP Poll appearances... and Tennessee would hold this #2 position for an astounding 48 seasons. Tennessee's lead over the rest of the SEC (aside from Bama) would reach its peak in the 2004 and 2005 seasons, when they had 90 more poll appearances than #3 Florida. Here is how many appearances each program had at the end of 2004:
594- Alabama
526- Tennessee
436- Florida (trailed UT by 90)
433- Auburn (trailed UT by 93)
406- LSU (trailed UT by 120)
361- Georgia (trailed UT by 165)
*In 2005, Tennessee maintained that 90 appearance lead through the first 10 releases of the AP Poll. By the 11th release, Tennessee fell out of the AP Poll and the slow decline began.
*In 2015, LSU passed Tennessee in AP Poll Appearances
*In 2016, Florida passed Tennessee in AP Poll Appearances
*In 2019 (Week 3), Georgia passed Tennessee in AP Poll Appearances
*On Sunday, when Auburn is ranked in the AP Poll, they will tie Tennessee and by January, Auburn too will join the ranks of teams sliding ahead of the Vols in AP Poll appearances.
*Tennessee was #2 in this category for nearly half a century. It took a very long time for everyone to catch up, but by next season, Tennessee will rank 6th in the SEC in all-time AP Poll appearances.
What an absolute collapse of a once great program.

Further:
In 1998, Tennessee had the second most number of SEC championships at 13. Georgia was 3rd with 10, and LSU was 4th with 7. In 2017 UGA tied Tennessee for 2nd place when they won their 13th SECC. This year, LSU has a chance to move within one with 12. In the next few years, UT could easily fall to 4th place in SEC championships.
In 1998, Tennessee was 10th all-time in win% at 0.6966, Georgia was 15th (0.63117), and LSU was 16th (0.62924).
As of the end of last season, UT was 11th in all-time win% (0.67486), UGA 12th (0.65278), and LSU 13th (0.65171). In the next few years, UGA and LSU could easily pass UT for all-time win%.
If UT doesn't consolidate their feces soon, they'll be last of the B6 in the SEC.

While 1980 was a very very very long time ago there were color TVs then.

You woke up this morning and immediately thought of VOLS

Yeah, but there was only one in town and it would take the horse and buggy a long time to get there.

Realizing that they went 5-5 this decade against a school that ignores football would have brought you to the same conclusion without all the extra work.

Apparently not up in the hills of Tennessee.

UGA plays in conference championship in 4 days, yet you're posting about VOLS.
Guess you must know that you're going to get slaughtered.

All that research and one number everybody understands when it comes to UGA:

It's funny. Tennessee and South Florida have the exact same record in this decade (62-62) but it feels like South Florida's been the much better program. That's due to the fact that South Florida's had two 10+ win seasons while Tennessee's had none. It seems like Tennessee hasn't had a high peak season where they go 10-2 forever. Their ceiling has been stuck on 8-4 and 9-3 type seasons.

Tennessee's last Top 10 finish was in 2001.
They had six Top 10 finishes under Fulmer between 1995 and 2001.... prior to that, their last Top 10 finish was in 1990.
They've had just six Top 10 finishes in 30 years and all six came within a tight, 7-year period. For the other 23 years that bookend the Fulmer good years, Tennessee has been absolutely miserable.

You're right. Tennessee has never really considered Georgia a rival.
