Tennessee quarterback Brian Maurer, hoping to bring awareness to the importance of mental health, on Friday detailed in an Instagram post that he was planning to kill himself on Jan. 22 before receiving a phone call from his mother that day.

quote:

"I thought I lost my battle with depression and my pain had come to an end," Maurer wrote on Instagram about the events of Jan. 22. "As I was going to do it I looked up and said 'god if this isn't your plan for me please send me a sign.'
"2 minutes later my mom called me with my baby nephew Jeremiah and she said she was just calling to say she loved me, I then knew by ending my pain I would be causing so much more to the people who loved me."

Damn. I hate to be that guy, but I have to wonder if those concussions he had last season played a role? I felt so bad for him

I think it’s a legit question. He was falling out on the sidelines vs. UGA.

Goes back to childhood per his IG post.

His dad is doing 25 for banging a 14 year old runaway, and he had several friends killed in HS.

My grandmother committed suicide when my mom was in her 20s. Totally changed her life and her siblings. Sucks for me not knowing the woman she was.

Suicide shouldn’t be a taboo topic anymore. I hope he truly gets the help he seeks. It will be a continuous battle.

You know, maybe he shouldn't be playing football. I know he had depression for years but those concussions certainly didn't help.

I wish there was some sort of combination of words that could make me believe in God, but the whole faith thing just seems like wishful thinking.

Usually if you ask someone why the believe in God its either "thats how I was raised" or "cuz the bible says to" and it's like that's great, but how the hell are you going to go your whole life without questioning either of those things?

Anyway, the point of this post is that to someone who is suicidal, and not religious, quoting bible verses to them is no more helpful than quoting a burger king menu, and that doesn't mean they're a bad person. It just means that all though you mean well, you're not helping. And I mean that as respectfully as possible.

When my mom passed away when I was 20, people kept telling me things about "Gods plan" and it only upset me more. A quote from Cormac Mccarthys novel Sutree "what could a child know of the darkness of Gods plan"

God Bless Brian Maurer and anyone enduring depression. Robin Williams suicide finally forced me to focus on the severity of the problem in mainstream American society. Robin Williams had everything anyone would ever want in material things, fame, fortune, and a large loving family - and he still couldn't find a reason to live.

I hope Brain Maurer's message and honesty saves lives. He's selflessly giving people on the edge battling depression hope and another reason to live.
