I was watching old games on YouTube tonight. It got me thinking about schools like Iowa, Minnesota, Penn State, UCLA, and Colorado. They have good teams sometimes. but they can't quite get there. Clemson on the other hand, has broken into the club. Who is positioned best to break into the club next?

Depends on who you consider to be in the club currently.

It’s simple actually.

The best players are in the South. Those schools can’t recruit on an elite level consistently to be elite.

Are you saying Miami (FL) or LSU?

You can't just call the whole south. That's a lot of universities with football teams.

Hell, I will jump in with my best guess. A&M, we always seem to be one step away. Whether it's the right players and staff or not, we never quite get there. Our football program has the most support and one of the biggest budgets in the country. We were just one step away. We took it when we stole Jimbo.

They are a trillion lightyears away. They could win the championship this year and still not even be close to that “club”.

Believe it or not Minnesota has 7 national championships. So I would argue they are already in the club.

They may be the crusty old drunk on the corner barstool at club meetings, that nobody ever talks to, but they're there.

I didn't start it as a thread to bash each other. I started it as a serious discussion.

I mean what I said, we aren't even knocking now. We are just gonna let ourselves in the door. The move to the SEC was huge for us. We have that positive association going for us in the recruiting trail and in the media. That alone has elevated our status. Now toss in our recruiting since the move. No more 2nd in Texas Reggie McNeal type players. We get the #1 in state.

We'll just show ourselves in friend.

You are going to let yourselves in the door? I feel like that would require you winning well....

anything.

I’m not trying to bash each other’s teams either. No need to bash someone on a completely different plane of existence.

Ok.

Club is invite only, for teams with skins on the wall and consistency of success. Otherwise, door is locked.

There are 14 SEC schools; not all are elite. I get that it was huge for A&M, but y’all haven’t done jack in the SEC except pull a FEW upsets over elite teams. That makes you a scrapper, not elite.

That’s cute. Elite teams own their state recruiting EVERY year (unless Bama comes calling, then it’s a fight). I can’t even believe your argument is a handful of recruits and a conference change.

That shows just how far away the Aggies are...

If you don't think Miami and LSU aren't already in, then you obviously only been watching college football for a few years. Pendulems swing, roller coasters are ridden. But they always come back. Heck, even Auburn is in the room.

I remember when Prothro broke his leg. He shouldn't have even been in the game at that point IIRC. You guys were terrible back then.

On the field since 2012, Bama has won the west 5 times and AU twice.

Let yourself in?

Not a bad question but you caught the board in a surly mood this morning. Probably the heat warnings for tomorrow.

Here is the thing... not only is getting your chair in the elite room not easy it isn't assured you get to keep sitting there.

Army was elite with a capital E back in the day, now they mostly beat up on the bottom feeding MAC. Minnesota has more national titles then you can shake a stick at but now they are the "take a breather" game for the rest of the Big 10.

Heck, going by results and rankings Arkansas was elite from the 60s through the 80s and no one is claiming we are elite now.

So what teams are not quite there today? I'd argue that Auburn is hanging around the door. National title appearance and two SEC championship games in recent years is pretty darn impressive. But they keep slipping back to 8 wins or so. It is a roller coaster ride of "we're really good" followed by "we're painfully average".

LSU has had a good record the last few years but... they just can't beat Alabama and they have a tendency to drop at least one "WTF" game every season. Am I saying they are hot garbage? No. But they are a team hasn't been able to quite get over that hump to the being elite stage. They have been in the past and I am sure they will be in the future, but right now they aren't quite there.

Minnesota? Uh, they haven’t been a top 10 team in like 60 years

Penn State has 2 titles plus an undefeated season (1994). That’s alot. They used to be considered a “blue blood.” Tons of wins from 1969-2008

Colorado? Were good from 1987-2001, but are pretty poor outside of that. Not a special program, Mizzou dominated the head to head

If it is just “let yourself in”, who would be left out?

Top tier historical elites would be Bama, ND(distant past still counts), tOSU, OU, and USC(ok RatRodDawg, I'll admit it), and Michigan (many in the distant past, but most wins carries some weight too)

Then there is the next tier where they have multiple championships but not quite enough that would be, Texas, UF, LSU, Auburn,Tenn, Minnesota(based on the distant past, maybe should be in top tier but man they suck so bad now), Nebraska,Miami, FSU, Clemson, and Penn State. So if somebody is going to join the most elite club, then these guys are the closest.
