Why name your football venue a swamp?
Just curious since Alligators can live in other places, not just swamps.
"The swamp, where opponents need a mosquito net or they'll get malaria"

Stagnant water and decay does seem fitting for the state, though, having lived there, venomous snakes and fire ants should get an honorable mention. And Condos. Condos as far as the eye can see.
Personally I feel the gator name is a poor choice. Lets face it, the species was nearly wiped out and it took quite a strong conservation effort to bring it back to the pest status it holds today. Besides gators are associated with everywhere in the South.
No, the species they should name their sports team after is the Palmetto Bug. Its a flying, armor plated, cockroach that is damn near impossible to kill. They are known for landing in people's hair and spreading filth and disease. Not even the mighty fire ant can compare with the Palmetto Bug.
Sure, a gator is not something you want to shake hands with, but they rarely enter your home and the alligator is not known for its aviation tendencies. Go with the Florida Palmetto Bugs and everyone will fear you.

Why did your school start out as Texas Agricultural & Mechanical University. And why still Aggies? No one else does.
From A&M’s inception, it was almost exclusively a military prep school. Why not TMI?
Obviously you now have great programs in agriculture science and engineering. So maybe the creators were just forward looking. Can’t wait until all college stadiums have pet cemeteries next to them.
