I'm an Alabama graduate with ties to Louisiana and Texas. Most of you won't care, but I have no reason to promote Mississippi State or Starkville. I've long heard the jokes about Starkville and to be honest, I've preferred Oxford as a place to visit, don't particularly prefer camo mixed with Maroon, and I'm not convinced that English Bulldogs are a very good breed of dog. However, I must give Mississippi State University and their fans their due.

In my opinion, both the town and the campus have come miles and miles from where they were when I first visited. The campus once seemed bare with worker-housing type buildings mixed with older structures and even some random Quonset hut type structures. No longer. It now resembles the established University that it is. Downtown Starkville and the Cotton District also have improved to the point that they looked like a great place to invest in. Beyond that, there is a comfortable vibe there and on campus that is palpable. I'm not sure I've ever felt hospitality like I did yesterday.
Finally, when Tua went down and stayed down, the crowd around us was as respectful as I have ever heard. The rousing applause they gave him, along with the cowbells, was an opponent tribute I'll never forget.

Cheers, Bulldogs, and thanks. I'm looking forward to returning.

Starkville has come a long way, but it was never as bad as portrayed.

The huts were still there in the early 90’s for horticulture programs. They made perfect green houses for growing things during the fall and winter months.

There was a Bama poster her a few years ago that was on campus for buisness during the Spring bloom and couldn’t stop talking about how beautiful the campus is. Most people who trash the city and the university are either OM posters or people who have never stepped foot on campus. I invite this guy to come to DNF during baseball season. He will be blown away

In my experience most college towns are much better than any online message board would have you believe. Too much influence from rival fanbases that see what they want to see rather than what actually is.

I'm looking forward to visiting Starkville at some point in the not so distent future, along with every other SEC town I haven't gotten to yet.

Anytime you have 20,000 people all between 18-23 years old, there will be plenty to do and a fun place. When I went to Auburn, I thought I would occasionally travel to Montgomery or Columbus GA but I never did. In fact, I rarely even went to a movie. There were too many activities on campus to do. Fun times.

Mississippi State has one of the prettiest campuses in the country. Especially in the Spring. And Starkville is now a great college town.

That wasn’t the case 20 years ago. They used to not even have much tail gating. It was a dump. Things have changed and State has made great strides. And their stadium is fantastic.

Anyone dumping on Mississippi State or Starkville now either just want to be negative or haven’t been there in the past decade or so. They’ve done a lot of good there and should be commended.

It surprises everybody that hasn’t been in 15-20 years. Beautiful campus set in a quirky/unique small town that is continuing to grow.

I have family that lives next to the stadium. My uncle and cousin actually weld those obnoxious cowbells.

My daughter's a junior there, and my entire family are from Tuscaloosa and Bama alumni. She wants to be a vet.

Starkville is still the worst town in the SEC, but the gap has closed tremendously. All thanks to the current athletic directors at Alabama and Florida.

Think about that. The two top athletic departments in the SEC have hired athletic directors from MSU. The last two marketing directors for MSU athletics are now both at Clemson.

State has never played for a national championship in any sport before 2013. Since then they have played for three and been within a win of two more finals appearances. Last year, 13 of the 16 sports played in the postseason. We’ve never had 10 before

The whole vibe has changed around Starkville. That has created a good environment. Home prices are up big. High end condos that have been in other SEC towns for a decade are now there. There are great restaurants.

The problem with this vibe change is that State fans have a taste of winning and are a little over the top. I think Moorhead is a bad fit, but the hand he’s been dealt this year is terrible and fans ought to realize it. If he gets up to a bowl game With the injuries and auspensions it will be one of the most tremendous coaching jobs in recent history.

I’ve been saying for years on here that the people who rip Starkville have either never been or haven’t been since the 90’s.

Some people just parrot what others say, shite like it’s a “dump” etc and those people have never even been. Starkville has come a long way in 20 years with a ton of new construction on the way. Lot of businesses are coming and I admit it is light years different from what it was in the 90’s.

I graduated from MSU in 97 and immediately went to Baton Rouge for grad school. BR was the second worst in the SEC and it was a world of difference.

That gap has closed tremendously since then. And BR has had seven shootings in the past two days. That is still a rare occurrence in STK.

Yesterday was my 1st visit to Starkville. I enjoyed the gameday atmosphere, tailgating, hospitality, beautiful campus & stadium. Love the Barnes & Noble next to the stadium. Also, convenient parking, easy access in & out of the University.

It’s not surprising that with an MSU degree you were forced to live with the dregs of society in BR because you couldn’t afford to be anywhere else.

Starkville has improved, but it doesn’t hold a candle to Baton Rouge.

All depends on what you are looking for and what you rank them on, use crime stats for example and Starkville damn sure aint last, if you judge on the amount of fast food chains it loses every time.

If you want a sleepy southern small town Starkville is as good as it gets, not everyone wants something like BR.
