Spurrier: Why did Saban wait until halftime to bench Hurts and insert Tua?

Tua Tagovailoa will long be remembered for coming into the second half of the National Championship Game and leading the Alabama Crimson Tide to a comeback victory over Georgia. The move to replace Jalen Hurts at quarterback may have been one of coach Nick Saban’s best, if not risky, moves in his career.
For one former SEC coach, the move to Tagovailoa came a bit later than if he were still the coach.
“I probably would have done it in the second quarter,” Steve Spurrier said on The Paul Finebaum Show. “I probably wouldn’t have waited all the way to halftime.”
Spurrier was known for a quick hook with his quarterbacks, especially during his time at Florida, but Hurts had lost only two games as a starter in two seasons: the national title game against Clemson the previous year and at Auburn to end the 2017 regular season.

Motherfricker rode Garcia for way too long instead of Shaw when he was playing poorly

The old ball sack is jealous of Saban.

Yep....before Saban everyone said Spurrier was the best SEC coach since Bryant. Now SOS is an afterthought, especially after how he bailed on USCe.

It was a desperation move because he literally had no other choice. Bama can beat ~90% of the teams they play simply by being far, far, exponentially more talented. We all have eyeballs and can see Hurts is a running athlete playing QB but can't throw a lick, but hey it got them incredibly far regardless. I'm guessing he wanted to see if hurts would pull out some more runs out of his arse like he typically does, but it never happened.
That first half we did what any great defense would do and shut them down. It's funny to me when people say Saban was so "courageous" or "ballsy" to play Tua in the second half. Umm...we all saw the fisrt half and saban knew if he trotted hurts back out there they were undoubtedly losing. So you either have a 100% chance of losing with hurts, or a 50/50 chance of losing with the unknown guy, with those odds it's easy to decide to throw the unknown in. And lo and behold, it worked like a charm. We got whooped in the 2nd half.

He's not wrong
Do you think Bama has any chance in that game if Hurts plays the entire time?

Spurrier not the GOAT SEC coach (post Bryant) anymore, but still the GOAT at rustling all fanbases

We didn't have a winning record at any point after the first game

Spurrier is a hair on Saban's arse. They were once thought to be comparable. This probably annoys Steve. However, Steve was very quick to yank QBs there is no doubt.
