Probably either MSU or UGA just based on those goings on of the young season.

If Auburn somehow pulls the offense's head out of its arse (not holding my breath) they're in the convo as well.

I doubt LSU is down for the count though. They'll play a role in the west.

Based on the small sample set thus far, Mississippi State and Georgia would be my 2a and 2b.

The evidence suggest it's
Mississippi State or Georgia we'll see who wins that one Saturday and that's probably your answer. It's not
LSU
Florida
Tennessee
Arkansas
Texas A&M
Ole Miss
South Carolina or
Missouri

The MSU UGA game this weekend will answer a lot of questions IMO.

Im afraid to answer it.

It is State followed by Auburn and Georgia in a tie for third. No shame in losing to the best team in America by 8 on the road.

What about only beating Mercer by 14 at home? Does that carry shame?

Look...

Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, Kentucky, etc. have all had surprising starts, and they may very well be better than what anyone ever thought they would be this year. They may even end up Top 25 teams. But let's be realistic here...

*Since 1992, if you look at the Final AP Poll of each season and find the two highest ranked SEC teams, 96% of those slots are filled by "Big 6" teams.

*The only exceptions were Ole Miss in 2015.... who it turns out was massively cheating in order to get to the 2nd highest rated SEC team at the end of that season. The other was South Carolina in 2013.... who didn't land there overnight. They had a legendary, HOF coach in Steve Spurrier who spent a decade building them to that point. This particular South Carolina team finised in the Top 10 in 2012, 2013, and 2014... with 2014 being the year they cracked the Top 5 and finished as the 2nd highest ranked SEC team.

I don't have the time to keep going back, but my guess is that since the late 1950s, you'll only find Big 6 teams finishing as the two best in the league. Even Kentucky's 1976 team did not finish in the AP as one of the two best SEC teams of that year.

So as fun as it is to think about Kentucky, Vandy, and/or Mississippi State challenging for the SEC Title, its just not realistic. Those programs do not have the athletes and it would frankly take a miracle for one of those to finish as one of the two best SEC programs.

That leaves five: Georgia, Tennessee, Florida, LSU, and Auburn.

It's not going to be Tennessee. They look bad, and they already have a loss to Florida.

It's also unlikely to be LSU considering how they got destroyed in Starkville.

So that leaves Georgia, Auburn, or Florida. I would be shocked if it were not one of these 3 by the end of the season.

It's definitely UGA or MSU. Auburn not with them at the moment.

I do think we're close enough that we could get there or overtake them, but I'm not terribly confident that will happen.

You need a helluva lot more than one little rinky dink win to move all the way to number 1 when Bama spanked number 3 at the time. That is still the most impressive win anyone will have this year.
