I guess I never paid attention, but I heard him talking about it on Finebaum today.

He said he probably would have stayed there if he was single. What did you Vols do to his family to make them feel unwelcome?

He also seemed upset about how the fans treated some players.

He was underachieving with the talent he had during the regular season around year 2 or so of his tenure there. That Sweet 16 appearance was fools gold as the beat a bunch of nobodies to get there. He simply was not looking like a good coach once the talent left.

VOLS were top 5 in attendance his first two years and supported him plenty. No negativity at all towards the players. There was some negativity around town the last couple years as his teams struggled that I'm sure his family heard. Not like there were any death threats or anything or anyone targeting his family's safety. Probably just saying his young family may not have handled adversity as easily as he could on his own.

He did a good coaching job in year 1 imo and there was little to no backlash. The fringe of the fanbase did not like that he did not promote the program but I would say he got plenty of support. Pearl left some good young but inexperienced players but Cuonzo did a really solid job to be honest.

Year 2 he returned everyone from a team that finished second in the SEC in year 1 and did a horrendous coaching job. Had a couple games in December where VOLS did not reach the 40 point plateau iirc. A horrendous coaching job and no tourney appearance.

Year 3 VOLS returned everyone yet again and added Maymon and a very solid recruiting class. VOLS got off to another tough start and were on the outside looking in of the tourney in February despite being ranked in the preseason and having 3 future NBA players on the roster.

Petition got started to bring back Pearl (his show cause was expiring) and VOLS snuck in to the play in game. Beat Iowa in OT (a pretty good Iowa team), then smacked UMass who may be the worst 6 seed ever and a 14 seed in Mercer who was also pretty bad. Lost a close game in the S16 to Michigan after falling behind by 20.

He would have lost 6 of his top 9 after that year and his recruiting class that was coming in was very mediocre (has proven to be worse than that).

Bottom line he is a great guy and representative of the program but many of the reds did not like him because he does not have any flare to him and he also plays a horrendous brand of basketball.

He is not a very good coach either imo, but some may disagree.

Mizzou will likely be a perennial bubble/first weekend type team under him. Never saw him out coach anyone despite having more talent most nights.

Easy. Tennessee Fans kept worshipping Bruce Pearl and never gave him a chance. So he fled to California once he was able to.

This is true, but him being a shitty coach played in to it as well.

I remember something about the AD dragging his feet on extending his contract, and then doing something too late after the sweet 16.

Was just curious if there was ever any public reports of the family being treated badly or unhappy there. I hope he's not hyper sensitive, because I'm sure there's a few knuckleheads at Mizzou too.

He's supposedly turning the offense over to the new assistants.

No extension or raise after the 2013 season which was one of the worst coaching jobs I have seen at Tennessee.

I think Tennessee was very hesitant to extend/give him a raise after the S16 run as well due to the nature of the run and the state of the returning roster. It was more fool's gold than anything and I think both parties were hoping Marquette would hire him. When he did not get the Marquette job there was a charade (press release, etc.) of him coming back but then the Cal job came open and he took it and Tennessee didn't put up much of a fight.

Totally off the subject. But Steve Harvey and Cuonzo Martin with his mustache look so similar.

Trolling aside, it's hard for many fans other than Mizzou fans to realize why we like the hire so much and love the direction the program is heading. We realize he's underachieved with the talent he's had at UT and Cal, but Kim Anderson has to be one of the worst head coaches in college basketball history. Until your program wins a total of like 20 fricking games in 3 years after much historical success, then you hire a coach and in his first year brings in a top 5 recruiting class, it's exciting. Yes, we'll be disappointed if the results don't come on the court, but at least we have hope. Most Mizzou fans didn't expect Kim to do that well, but that was the biggest shitshow I've seen in Mizzou athletic history.

I don't blame Mizzou fans. I would be riding high on the hype train if we had signed the class you all did as well, especially coming off the CKA era.

I was not the biggest Cuonzo fan while he was at Tennessee (to say the least ) but he is a first class guy. Never heard anyone say anything negative about Cuonzo Martin as a human being. If he gets it going at Mizzou I don't think you'll find too many upset Tennessee fans.

He said he wanted his children in a more "diverse" environment when he moved to the bay area on the west coast. Whatever that means.
He's certainly insinuating some things.

There are plenty of "diverse" neighborhoods in Knoxville.

You can bet he didn't even drive through them, much less live or send his kids to school in them.

The bold isn't true. Tennessee fans desperately wanted to like him. The truth is he was dangerously close to going 0/3 in terms of making the tournament after his after his predecessor went 6/6. There was no real grumbling among the fans until it looked like Tennessee was about to miss the tournament again. Then, the team went on a run to sneak into the first four, and beat some bad teams to make the Sweet Sixteen. I'll concede the team was playing very well, but that was for the first time in his tenure.

The best game under him was that UK game in like '13 when we smoked them by like 30. Other than that the only bright mark on his career here was J Rich.

A lot of revisionist history goes on with his tenure here but it mainly boils down to a uncharismatic coach who was underachieving following easily the most successful/well like Men's Bball coach in program history. That was just a recipe for friction from both him and the fanbase.

This is exactly what I think explains the entire issue with Cuonzo. He followed an incredibly charismatic Pearl and had the personality of a doorstop. I have never seen VOLS fans get behind Men's BB like they did during Pearl's tenure, and rightly so. He absolutely was the most successful MBB coach in Knoxville in decades, and very involved in the community. The desire to be competitive in MBB was at an all-time high. Cuonzo followed up with under-performing seasons and didn't have the personality to win the fan-base over.

I hope he is successful at Mizzou, but I don't regret that he has moved on from UT.
