Honestly, I would have loved a free ride through college.

What happened? Yes, you are entertaining fans and making the university money. But you basically get a free degree while coaches and sometimes law enforcement look the other way because you play ball well.

At least 50 years and probably more like 70, maybe more. This shite has been going on for a long, long time.

Since they started supporting entire athletic programs.

Dude - Jimbo is getting 75 million a year to win 7 games a year.

Why should these kids be able to make money off of their name the same why olympics athletes do when they attend college?

Michael Phelps didn’t give up his endorements when he went to Michigan. Why should these kids not get get money off of their own names?

Not a salary, not a garunteed amount just what they could get? So that Mark Emmett can make 3.2 million dollar a year?

And Will Wade is the criminal for paying a kid.

System is so fricked beyond the belief. Honestly it’s borderline Marxist to not let the kids make money off of their own name. They require that money to be distributed equally based upon a sex, no mater who earned what, instead of merit.

So you get money if you lose 2.5 millions of dollars a year to keep operating like women’s basketball.
TLDR: NCAA = Communism: Prove Me Wrong

Get the frick out. These kids are pampered and compensated VERY well. They are being set up to succeed in life with no recurring debt. No one is forcing them to do this and they have other options. Slaves didn't have any of that.

Whu would you be concerned about them being paid for their name and likeness?

Which seems like a basic human right to me, tbh.

I have no issue with them getting paid for their NIL and didn't say that I did.

My comment was strictly directed at the idea that college sports can be considered anything resembling slavery.

Man y’all were knocking on the door on 2011.

Mike Leadh should be there. Honestly wouldn’t be surprised if Pittman got them rolling. Gotta hit on those recruits

If the university felt you were worth a scholarship, either athletically or academically, you would have gotten one. Scholarships are earned by those that work to excel in some way. Wanting one is not enough.

The cost to the university of the degree and room/board pales in comparison to the value one of the 85 scholarship football players provide.

Recognizing your value is not being entitled. They aren’t entitled, but your post reeks of jealousy.

I mean lets be real some of these guys don't really care about a free ride. However the NCAA is basically the only way to get to the NFL. If there was an alternative you may have a point, but there's not so you don't. Some guys would much rather have cash compensation than scholarships. I mean, its not like certain degrees are even worth a shite anyways.

At the end of the day some players are being compensated with something that, to them, isn't actually worth anything.

Imagine if you did a job for someone and they gave you $200,000 dollars worth of paint. Sure, the value of that paint is $200,000 dollars, but you have no use for it so you complain. The person then responds by saying 'Are you crazy? If you ever start a painting business you'll be set for life! Stop being so entitled'

I think that's already changed but tbh, they overvalue their name/likeness rights. Unless I have some other connection to them, I'm not cheering for them because of their name or likeness but because they are wearing orange.

People forget that unlike in the pros, these kids aren't famous yet. The schools help make them famous by handing them a pre-built brand and fanbase and promoting them but there are plenty of no-names who emerge every year in the various drafts. Where did they come from? Well, they went to a small school that had no fanbase. No one knows or cares who they are but they just got drafted higher than a guy everyone knows because that guy went to a p5 school and was promoted by his school. And yet when it comes to marketing potential, which is where the real money is made, that less talented guy who attended a p5 is starting his pro career with an advantage despite being drafted lower.

It's a far more mutually beneficial scenario than it's portrayed. I'd kill to have the power of the Tennessee brand behind me. Hell I'd kill to even have the power of Vanderbilt's fanbase (yeah they have one) behind me. It would mean instant success for a lot of endeavors - or at least as close to guaranteed success as you can get because fans will support the brand.

We could take a random ranter, even the worst among us, and make them both rich and famous in an instant with the power of any SEC fanbase. All we'd need is youtube and fan support.
