Ankle sprains are minor injuries that take time to heal but completely recoverable. Why would you let someone drill a hole in your bones and place foreign materials inside your body when it’s completely unnecessary and now a risk of infection? The sprain would be done and over in a month or so but now he has foreign material in his body forever. I don’t know if it’s wire or Kevlar or what it is but it’s not supposed to be there and it wasn’t necessary for complete 100% healing. That was a risk of infection for nothing. But the doctor made 100k so he’s good.

I believe this surgery is an alternative to using screws. Recovery time is quicker and supposedly because the wire is permanent, it makes high ankle sprains less common in the future.

i wouldn't want to play Alabama when they aren't at full strength. That only gives them an excuse to make it back to the top 4 once Tua returns. Otherwise they play in the Sugar Bowl, and they get raped by Texas because their feelings were hurt, and they didn't feel like playing in a meaningless game. Or some other lame excuse that their coach will think up.

I know a person very close to me. They have metal toxicity poisoning right now because of a metal rod that they had put in their femur years ago. This is caused them great suffering. It is of my way of thinking that you don’t put anything in your body that isn’t an absolute must.

First thing. 99.9 % of folks commenting here have no idea what it’s like to be an athlete like SEC football players. The best training, best sports medicine, best diet, best strength and conditioning. These guys are physical beasts.

A condition like this, performed on a non world class athlete would no doubt prevent us from doing even the most basic physical chores.

For someone like Tua, who understands how to perform with pain in addition to all the benefits described above.....an injury like his is just another day at the office.

It’s insanity. Now Tua has this in BOTH of his ankles.

I always think of Saban at the bar scene when he says, "you got a problem with my boys Sheriff?"

The Monroe Police felt the overreach on that one fo sho.

Agreed. Why is there a surgery for an ankle sprain in the first place? It’s completely unnecessary.

Seems like the surgery itself would keep him out for more than a few weeks.

I'm pretty sure Waldrop said three to four weeks in the video.

All of this kind of makes me wonder if Nick really gives a hoot about his players' long term welfare.

Saban is not going to play Tua if it will hurt him permanently. He is a lying butthole, but he just is not that kinda Petrino person. If Tua can play he will, if not he won’t.

Petrino is a wretched human being. I agree that Saban doesn't fit that mold.

I hope you're right and Tua will play only when he's healthy again.

People sometimes forget the pressure the athlete exerts on physicians, parents, and coaches. The desire to play and to not let teammates down is strong. Particularly with young men like Tua.

This was covered extensively when he had the same procedure last year. It’s all everybody talked about leading to the playoffs.

LSU DT Glen Logan had the same procedure, and he came back at the 5 week mark for Florida.

Everyone heals differently of course, and I suspect a 300 lb lineman would need more time to return to full strength than a QB.

All of this is happening under the watchful eye of Tua's family. You're sounding mentally unstable.

Mentally unstable to do a procedure that the team's orthopedic surgeon/specialist recommends and helped develop/pioneer? I don't know if you can grasp this, but Tua can refuse the surgery. They can't force him to have the surgery against his will. Maybe Tua isn't like some former LSU players who sat out when dinged up in order to "preserve" themselves for the NFL.

Because he's the one in control of whether the surgery gets done.

"Tua, do you want to have this surgery?"

"No, doctor, I'll just let it heal normally."

"OK."

"THE HELL YOU WILL. DOC, YOU DO THAT SURGERY AND YOU DO IT NOW. WE GOT LSU TO THINK ABOUT."

"Sorry, Tua, Coach Saban said we have to do it. So I guess, even though it's your ankle, and neither you nor your parents want it done, I have no choice but to do it. He's Coach Saban, after all."

A high ankle sprain can put you on the shelf, depending on the severity, for several weeks. It has a tendency to be easily reinjured and can hamper an athlete of this caliber for a long time.

Most of you on here crying are mentally unstable because you put winning this game ahead of anything else. This procedure has been around since 2011. It is an advance in sports medicine and no different than any other procedure these guys have.
