Should Vandy commit to a triple option offense?

First of all, I'm not exactly a fan of the triple option offense in today's college football, because I believe that it limits a program's ceiling. However, Vandy already has a limited ceiling due to their academic standards and program view. Georgia Tech and Vandy are very similar in that both are in a state dominated by another program, UT and UGA, and both have very high academic standards. Both have trash stadiums compared to the rest of their conference's. However, one is a successful program year in and year out, and the other is consistently a cellar dweller. Defense has never been the problem for Vandy, it's offense that holds them back, and that's because they can't attract the talent that other SEC programs can. With the triple option offense you are recruiting guys that solely fit your scheme, and most likely wouldn't be top targets for other SEC programs.

The triple option offense seems like a perfect fit for Vandy Imo.

I wouldn't call Georgia Tech a consistent winner. They have had their share of poor seasons since Paul Johnson got there. I love the triple option but when you are going against superior athletes EVERY week there is only so much you can do.

Somebody pointed out yesterday that the answer to most questions asked on RANT is NO, that trend continues.

They had 5 teams throw up 40+ points on them THIS YEAR.

In Paul Johnson's 10 years at GT he has gone 76-54, been to 8 bowl games, been to 3 ACC Championship games, winning one, and been to two Orange Bowl games, winning one. I think Vandy would kill for a 10 year stretch like that.

I never said Defense has never been A problem, I said defense has never been THE problem. Plus a triple option offense takes a lot of stress of the defense.

Yup. Opponent SEC scores this year were like drawing powerball numbers.

If I read that GT decided not to extend Paul Johnson's contract, I wouldn't lose any sleep. It's fun to watch when teams don't prepare enough for it, but painful when all cylinders aren't firing. We will went the Coastal Division every 3 or 4 years, but will average 8 wins a season.

They should withdraw from the SEC and join the Ivy League

Without Paul Johnson I think GT would struggle to recruit and field a competitive team. I think Vandy fans would love to say, "We will win the SEC East every 3-4 years, but will average 8 wins a season."

Doing it all while having never played College ball.

Also, GT had their Conference 'Ship vacated due to impermissible benefits I believe. Hell, at least they got something for painting outside the lines.

I'm looking at you Oxford.

Triple option offense takes stress off of your own defense, I think the idea is simple. Triple option offense chews clock and creates long drives and less 3 and outs. In turn your defense gets more rest and stays off the field longer, thus taking stress/fatigue off the defense.

Watching what Georgia did to Georgia Tech this year put to rest this notion for the Vandy fans that still wanted it. Kyle Shurmur is great but in general, Vandy needs to go away from the pro style offense and focus on mobile quarterbacks instead of trying to out-muscle teams.

Not sure why you have this logic. Triple option does not guarantee any of these. TO has largely been figured out, which means 3 and outs and short drives. Techs only success is when they get decent players, something you said vandy cant do

Yeah I think it was because Demaryius Thomas played in 3 games including the championship game in which he was later ruled ineligible for accepting $300 worth of clothing. They didn't have any probation, scholarship loss or anything else. Far from what the rebels did down in Oxford.

On a somewhat related note, Paul Johnson and Hugh Freeze both never played a snap of college football. Mike Leach and Cutcliffe as well.

It only works because teams don't prep for it regularly. Once you introduce it, all of your opponents start prepping for it regularly. Then it stops working.

GT won the ACC with it early, then everyone started introducing dedicated TO time in their practices year-round.
