What are a few hometown restaurants/bars? Going there tomorrow.

Bar the Social is your best bet.
Food Gainesville is well rounded
Adam's for BBQ
Volcanic Sushi for Asian
Embers for higher end
Satchels is a must go for unique pizza and environment
Prums Kitchen is very good as well
The Top is higher end but more reasonable that Embers with a younger crowd.

Black Adder Brewery is my favorite "bar" in town. They brew their own beer and are all very good. Owners are likely behind the bar and are super friendly. Near the Mall. You can bring food from a restaurant.
There are other breweries in town. Swamphead is the second best IMO.
Hogans is the best deli/bar. Great sandwiches
43rd street deli has a great breakfast lunch menu. Two locations
Relish is great Gainesville smashburger chain.
Bangkok Square is the best Thai restaurant
Embers or Mark Prime for Steaks
Ballyhoo for seafood and drinks.
Though if you want fresh Florida seafood, I would order from the Northwest seafood. They are a fish monger that will fry, steam, or grill whatever they have for $2 per pound.
Then head to Black Adder for drinks.

2008- You need to try Mahzu sushi. Much better sushi IMO.
