Spurrier has a good argument for pure SEC coach IMO. Level the playing field in terms of talent and resources and I don't know if you could tell a difference between Saban and Spurrier.
1 - Spur
2 - Saban
3 - Les
4- Franklin
5 - Richt

Wtf has Franklin done?? This is bullshite
He has taken Vandy to two straight bowl games, something never done in the history of that program. Vanderbilt also finished ranked in the final Coaches Poll, something that program has never once accomplished.

Oh Idk, just taken the worst team in the SEC to 2 bolws in 2 years and a 9 win season in the second with a team that won 4 games toatl before he got there maybe.

This will be a good question to ask in 2020 when Saban/Miles/Spurrier are finished (most likely), Sumlin and Muschamp have ample time to show what they can do...and if CMR can get that one last step.

No.
Spurrier is an all time great coach, Saban is a legend. Spurrier has 1 NC in his career, Saban has 3 of 4. Huge difference.

I'd actually rank the top 5 and put Spurrier ahead of Richt.

This is true. But i dont think Miles can pass Spurrier. He and Saban are the only 2 that have done it in multiple places so they are the top 2. Id go so far to say if Spurrier can win 1 at SC he would even pass Saban imo.

I know you're trying to go against the grain, but anyone who puts any coach other than Saban in the top spot does not have credibility. Spurrier had talent and resources at Florida and yet only won a single national title. This was at a time when the SEC was far weaker then it is now. Granted he won 6 SEC titles but Saban's not too far behind that score with 4....but he also has 4 national titles. Saban is a living legend.
What Spurrier has done at South Carolina is remarkable but he's also the first competent coach still in his prime to grace the sidelines in Columbia in the last 20 years or so.

If he can win an NC at SCar...well kudos to him, for sure.

I will defer Sumlin until he goes for his second year. If he performs, let there be no more talk of "we weren't ready" or "they just came off a big game the week prior".
No more excuses.
No more excuses.

3. Ball Coach/Mark Richt
5. James Franklin
Any dispute about this?
I know he's at Vandy and so he gets the benefit of the doubt, but he is only on that list because no one else except Mullen and Muschamp have been in their jobs long enough. I would put Muschamp 5. Franklin is 0-6 against Richt, Spurrier, and Muschamp. The teams he beat last year combined for a 36-73 record.

So if he won 1 at Carolina you dont think he should pass Saban? I think he would for a breif period considering Saban has more years in him than Spurrier. Saban would pass him agian shortly after but he should be top dog until then(should he win 1 of course)

1. Nick Saban
2. Les Miles
3. Steve Spurrier
4. James Franklin
5. Mark Richt
As to Miles and Spurrier, I think it is more impressive what Spurrier has been able to accomplish and build at South Carolina than what Miles has had to maintain at LSU. South Carolina is a smaller state that competes with a legitimate in-state rival (Clemson) for recruits and publicity. South Carolina also doesn't produce tons of great recruits. It never hurts to be close in proximity to Florida and Georgia, but what Spurrier has built there is still pretty remarkable. But, Miles has won more while at LSU and has beaten Spurrier every time the two have faced each other.
James Franklin, in my opinion, is hands down better in every category than Richt. What he has done at Vanderbilt is nothing short of extraordinary and I feel most coaches in the SEC could not achieve similar results as Franklin.
As for Richt, is he good? Yes. Great? No. He's got a very respectable overall record (2 SEC Championships, 6 East Titles, 2-1 in Sugar Bowls), but lets not forget the elephant in the room. Georgia is the one school in the SEC that has no excuse for not making or winning a BCS national championship by now. 5 SEC teams have done it by now, when will Georgia get its turn?

Referring back to '2020' another question will be the order for all time SEC football coaches...thinking Bryant, Neyland...where will Saban and Spurrier fit...maybe Miles too, will have to wait and see.
Posted on 2/27/13 at 8:29 am to DevellionDore
1) Saban
2) Spurrier
3) Miles
4) Franklin
5) Richt
2) Spurrier
3) Miles
4) Franklin
5) Richt

If we based everything on one year that could be an anomoly we'd have some terrible coaches up there now.
